Quad screening

i got my screening blood work back and I have the odds of 1 in 20 of the baby having spina bifida and I am so scared. Has this happened to anyone. The doctor told me not to worry because these screenings have false positives all the time. But I can't help but worry that my baby will be healthy. We go the the specialist on Thursday.

  • I am so sorry that you are dealing with this. I have no personal experience with spina bifida, or any knowledge on how things go from here. I do however have experience with getting scary news in a pregnancy and I can offer you this. Take a deep breath, don't use dr google and try to stay positive and take things one step at a time. This is a great place for you to seek support, but I am hoping that you wont need any! Good luck and keep us posted!

  • I heard nothing but bad things about these tests and false positives..

I know you will panic till you get further testing. But I'm thinking your baby is perfectly fine . just said A prayer for you .
  • I asked my doctor a ton of questions about false positives and he said MOST of the "positive" results they get from the quad screen, end up being negative, when verified through the next blood test. Most meaning 85-90%, in his words.
  • tinaa33 because im right there with you! I had a breakdown at work and cried for the first 3 hours of my day today.  Just breath and think positive thoughts! Im here if you want to PM me since we are both going through the same thing!

  • So sorry for your worries. I haven't been through this but a very close friend of mine who is 23 weeks was told baby could possibly have SB and had to see a specialist but the outcome was a positive one!! Hoping for the same experience for you also!! Good luck.
  • there are a number of factors that can create false positive in quad screen test such as incorrect measurement of the baby's gestational age. I had a similar experience a few weeks ago. We opted to go see genetic counselor and MFM specialist. Got a detailed ultrasound but it was inconclusive since the baby was only 17 weeks - they had a hard time seeing the heart and the face. So our option was either an amnio or harmony test. We chose the harmony test since it's noninvasive and it looks for the baby's DNA in my blood. The test is 99% accurate. Thankfully the test was covered by our insurance the result came back negative with the new adjusted risk of 1/10,000. Just remember that these tests are only screening, meaning it's not definitive that the baby has the condition!!!

  • With my previous pregnancy the test came back positive for an open neural tube defect. After further testing everything was fine. The doc said my blood was probably just mislabeled.
  • Thank y'all all so much!!! It really helps reading these stories of others going through the same thing I am I will post on here after my appointment on Thursday. :)
