'Measuring big'

Hi all,

This is my first ever discussion in a group and I'm new to The Bump. I'm 34+4 and was wondering if anyone else has been told they're measuring big against the average measurements for their date? I know these measurements consist of the baby, the placenta and waters etc but I'm worried about the implications of the larger measurements- not only if it could mean a larger baby but if this could indicate any possible complications. Is everyone else measuring about average?

My Dr has said that I'm on track for a bigger baby. But I take that with a grain of salt. He said I wasn't going to have a bigger baby the first time and he was wrong.

As long as your baby and you are healthy and doing fine I wouldn't worry about how you're measuring. Your baby will be as big as it will be and there isn't anything you can do to change it.

Rough time to be new but welcome! I've never been told this but from what I hear "measuring big" is not a sure indication of baby's weight or size and can be misleading. I would ask your dr at your next appointment if you are concerned.

I was told I was measuring big with my first. The last ultrasound they told me she was 8+ lbs. I gave birth to her vaginally with no implications and she was 7.7 lbs. As pp said, as long as everything is going ok and you and the baby are healthy, it is what it is. Good luck!

My doctors say ultrasounds have a +/- 2 pounds for estimating baby's weight. So, they give you an estimated guess and the baby could weigh two pounds more or two pounds less than that.

Belly measurements are even more inaccurate. I have "measured big" my entire pregnancy and have had ultrasounds to double check baby's weight. Ultrasounds have all shown baby right about average. I think every momma's body is just different and some of us carry larger than "average". Could mean a big baby or not but like others said, nothing can be done about that.

Fundal height and ultrasounds have me measuring 3 weeks ahead. I suspect that my due date is off, but I suppose we'll see what we'll see.

My baby was measured at 7.1lbs last week and I still have 3 weeks to go. My son was 9.13lbs so having a big baby is normal for me. Just think of it as having a nice healthy juicy baby.

Exactly this. I just had a measurement 2 weeks ago at the hosp when I fell, she measured 5lbs 8oz. Then I went in for my normal BPP/NST and they did another measurement at my OB's office (less than a week later) and she measured 6lbs 10oz. The one thing that both tech's told me was that the estimated weight is just that...an estimate. It can be +/- upto 2 lbs. That's a huge disparity.

At 32 weeks my dr ordered an ultrasound because my fundal height was measuring larger than expected. At that time they estimated baby to be 5lbs 6oz, they said that was more in line with 34 weeks gestation. I have my 36 week apt this week and she ordered another ultrasound because my fundal height was still larger than expected at my last apt. I keep hoping that things get rolling a little early because he's measuring so large although I know that is no definite indication of an early labor. My original due date was Feb 6th, based off of my last period, but they pushed it back to Feb 15th because he was measuring small at the initial ultrasound. I'm hoping the first date was more accurate... I can't wait to have my little guy here!

My first measured 2-3 weeks ahead most of the third trimester. This isn't the case with everyone, but I ended up going into labor at 37w3d. Turns out that he wasn't really a large (heavy) baby, at 7 lb 11 oz he was pretty average. He was actually just long and measured 22" at birth. The large fundal height was caused by his long legs and positioning in utero. They did give me an u/s late on the third trimester to check on him, but everything was fine. I delivered vaginally with I complications for me of him.

I'm measuring two weeks ahead by fundal height and about 30th percentile by ultrasound measurements. Both have a reasonably big margin of error so I'm not worried.

I measured big before I was pregnant.. :P

Joking aside, U/S also measured in 72 percentile at 32 weeks, and they don't plan on doing anymore U/S's because he's within normal range.

I'm measuring way ahead, but the doc isn't worried so I'm going with it. She was 7.5lbs at 35 weeks and my bump grew over two inches in two weeks. We'll see what happens!

I am.. I was told I'm 2 weeks ahead.. Which is scaring me being im only 35 weeks and measuring 37.. I'm like nooo.. I want my baby to stay in my belly full he's ready.. I don't wanna be told that he has to come out cause he's to big.. My biggest worry..

+/- 2 cm is the normal variation in fundal height measurements. And a suspected big baby is not a reason to induce (this does not necessarily apply to mommas with GD). My son was 9.14# and 23.5" inches long and I never measured big. I also decline late u/s just to look at size, because a suspected large baby leads to more interventions than actually delivering a large sized baby and I don't have GD.
