3d Ultrasound... Worth it or Skip it?

Hi ladies,

I found some posts about when is best to go, but didn't see any on if they are worth it in general.

So 3d ultrasound... Is it a do or a don't in your opinion and why.

Thanks :)

I agree all babies look a lot alike lol I did one with my first and was not going to this time but I found a good deal and did it. I'm happy I did because it helped me feel a little more connected. It was also cool because they gave us a DVD of the whole session I was able to send my parents which they of course loved :)
If you've never done one I think it's worth it especially if you can find a deal on groupon or living social :)

That's awesome! What a great perk!
  • I did one with my first and have one scheduled for Thursday for this baby. So I think they're worth it.

I also don't agree that all babies look the same in them. My son came out looking exactly like his 3D US and the only other one I've seen IRL looked just like her, too. I can't wait to see this girl!

  • I did a 3d ultrasound because as a FTM it helped me better connect with the little guy I'm growing.

I agree that all babies do look the same to me on ultrasounds, however, for me it made it much more "real" than the few crappy 2d ones I'd been given prior to that point. My 2D ones looked like anything but a baby!!
  • I went to a 3d/4d ultrasound place to find out the baby's sex early, but the 3d part wasn't very interesting at that point. As of now, I don't feel the need to go back because I already know I am having a girl, so I would like to keep what she looks like for when I meet her.
  • I did one to find out the sex because they don't tell you at the anatomy scan. I also got a heart beat bear which is adorable.
  • I had one today at 29w and it was awesome and it made it more real (as the big belly and aches and pains didn't make it that way) but we also got a video of it that we shared with family and they all enjoyed it. We were not going to do it if we had to pay since I agree they all look the same, but they told us it was free so we decided to do it. I'm really glad we did it was cool to see her move and see her little fingers and toes.

  • The 3D ones creep me out!
  • We did one with my son, and we enjoyed getting it done, and having the video of it. We decided not to do it for this baby because I read there might be some risks, and we have already had quite a few ultrasounds for medical reasons.

I think they are nice to get done because it help breaks up the time of your third trimester, because let's face it, the third trimester can drag. But I would make sure the place that does the ultrasounds have people who know what they are doing.
  • We did a 3/4D ultrasound, it was bought as a gift for us for Christmas. It was nice to do. My older children got see there baby brother for the first time. They are at school each time i've had medical ultrasounds. It was worth it, we got great pictures, dvd, and a recording of his heartbeat. It was a nice experience to share with the family.
  • I really appreciate all of the advice. I didn't even think that it may be a good way to get my 2 1/2 year old more excited. Maybe it will start to sink in that this baby is real.
  • We did two with my 1st (one for each set of parents. They live across the country from each other). We are doing one with this baby on Valentine's Day! Cannot wait. I think they are a fun keepsake and great way to involve family with the pregnancy.

  • I've had three so far (I'm high risk, so I get one once a month). It is kind of neat to make out features and see a little face developing, but I personally find them kinda creepy. I wouldn't pay for one.
  • I want to try and keep some element of surprise for when I meet my baby girl. Since I already found out the gender I don't wanna see all her features yet, I wanna save that for when I meet her! The idea is cool but I say wait
  • I'm traveling to visit my parents in a week and as a Christmas present they booked an ultrasound so they could be a part of the pregnancy but I realized that it was probably a 3d and when my mom checked it was and is now cancelled. I don't feel comfortable seeing what my baby looks like without DH there, and actually even before birth. I also think they are creepy. Just my 2 cents!

I wholeheartedly agree - and by "the same" I mean "creepy."

(I was all ready to feel guilty about posting this, but then I saw several other people in the creepy camp. The guilty feeling has now passed).

  • We did one so that our families could come see them. The place we normally do our monthly ultrasounds at doesn't allow video or anything, and the elective place gave you a DVD of the full ultrasound, so I wanted that as a keepsake too. It was worth it, in my opinion, to have our families there to share it with!
  • I did one just last week because the tech said she may be able to get a good shot. I said 'sure'. It's creepy to say the least and looks like baby was squirming so there's parts of the mouth in different spots and the nose too. I'd say skip it...
  • I get them only because I see the high risk doctor so it just comes with the territory.

I did it with my son and wish I didn't. The next day I went into pre term labor and got to see him anyway that week. Wasn't worth the money.
  • I was beginning to think I was the odd man out because I'm with @redheaded14‌ they creep me out a bit.
  • The FDA recommends against ultrasounds of the "entertainment" variety. Google for more info.
  • I'm with a high-risk practice again as I was with our first, so I have gotten more growth scans than most. With our first, we found the third-tri 3D/4D scans to look exactly like our baby did when she was born. I didn't think it possible, but it was true for us.
    Baby girl Lila born 2013.
    Baby boy Henry born 2015.
Expecting our capstone baby (boy) early March 2018.
  • My OB has a 3d capability and will usually flip it on for a minute at the end of my US, for fun. They've printed a pic or two for us, at various points. So I won't get a separate one, but if they want to do that, cool!

  • So glad to read I'm not the only one who thinks they are a bit creepy! No judgement to those who choose to.
    < Pregnancy Ticker >
  • My OB also has the capability, and they switch back and forth sometimes during the ultrasound. I love the pictures they've given us of his face and hands. I can already tell he's got my husband's nice round nose :) If I didn't get them with my normal ultrasounds, I'd probably want to do just one at some point during the pregnancy.

  • I say save the money and use it towards something you need for the baby. Just my personal opinion.

  • If you have the money to splurge on it go ahead. I've gotten a few already for free at my doctors but that's because the baby has a small problem they are keeping an eye on. I do love seeing my baby's face, but depending how much it is I don't think I would actually spend the money for it.
  • I have had quite a few people ask if I was going to get one, but I have always said no because they are all so creepy. Every one I had ever seen - creepy. My husband wants to do it and has been trying to convince me for a while, but I would not give in.
Last week, I switched to a new OB. At my first office visit, they did a quick ultrasound because my records had not gotten to them yet. The tech told me he would do a quick 3D look of the face and I didn't really say anything about it. I love seeing the regular ultrasounds so I was just watching along intently...and then he switched to 3D. I was SHOCKED at how exciting it was. He has the cutest little nose! I think this may have convinced me. It was just so cool to see.
I know some people who have paid so much to get them, which I just can't do. So I think I will look into a lower cost clinic or even an ultrasound school that does them to keep the $ down.

I feel like if you get them early, then yeah, they can be creepy.. as they still look slightly alien-ish. But we had ours at 27 weeks and got to see these 2 cute faces. At our regular monthly ultrasounds, they'll switch over during the appt, but I do agree that until a certain point, it can be a little creepy.

ETA: for some reason the picture doesn't work unless you click it? At least not on my end. Who knows.
  • I was told by an ultrasound tech that they best time to get them is between 28 and 32 weeks because that is when the amnio fluid is at its greatest amount which makes for better, "less creepy" photos.
  • I get one from my OB every month, they have the high tech equipment.. Its not important to me- personally I'm more concerned about the heartbeat etc. Babies in the womb look the same to me.
  • I think most of them are creepy. Aside from that I really wish people wouldn't post them on Facebook and other social media. They can be VERY accurate and some leave me thinking, "How unfortunate. Your kid is kind of ugly."

Keeping in mind, most newborns aren't the best looking, all swollen and smooshed.
  • I personally think they're creepy but I know a lot of people that have had them.

I rather spend the money it costs on something more important like diapers. But eh that's just my opinion. We lIve off my husband's military retirement check while he's in school so every dollar counts.
  • I absolutely loved it -- we had one done with my son. This time, we sadly cannot afford it, though we were lucky enough that the Dr. had 3D capability when we went for our AS and printed us a couple quick pictures, but I'm pretty sad we won't be getting it done this time.

  • We've had the 3D version done as well at my 20 and 28 week u/s. It's an option they can turn easily on and off so they do it without me even asking. I used to think the 3D u/s was really creepy but after actually seeing my baby like that I'm a fan. Seeing the baby look like a real baby helped me connect I think because we are waiting to find out the sex. I can't imagine me paying for that but it was pretty neat.
  • Thank you for all the opinions... I think I will try it. We got it as a gift, so I think I will try it and bring my two year along to help build the connection.
We will see if it ends up being creepy....
