Baby wearing/carriers

Has anyone bought or plan to buy a carrier or wrap?

We didn't have one with our daughter but now that we are active with her, think it's a good idea to have a carrier so we don't always have to have the stroller in tow.

We're looking at a wrap and a carrier but wondered what you wonderful ladies thought about them and what brand you prefer (and why).

We are considering the Ergo Baby carrier and either the Moby or Baby K'Tan wrap.

Thoughts?

Re: Baby wearing/carriers

  • I don't have any experience using them, but we decided to put both the Ergo Baby with infant insert, and the Boba Baby Wrap.

With the soft wraps, I found it hard to decide between Boba and Moby.  I think I might have liked some of the comments better with the Boba.  I want a soft wrap for around the house, but also, it's easier to use in a car because you can put it on at home, drive with a seatbelt over, and then just pop the baby in at the destination.  The Boba only works up to 35 lbs though and I think is only for front carrying.  Plus H would not wear it, hence the Ergo Baby Carrier as well.

The Ergo has great reviews and is not a 'crotch dangler', which can be unsafe for LO's spine.  It goes up to 45 lbs, and can be worn on the back or hip when LO is bigger.  It seems more fidgety to put on in the videos than the soft wraps.

The soft wraps seem to be better for hot weather too, though Ergo has a light/airy model.

  • I used the Moby when she was really little, then the ERGo as she got bigger.  I could never figure out the infant insert for that.  But my FAVORITE was a Mei Tai.  (Yes I had a lot of carriers.)  It is the easiest to put on.  ( I think )

  • With DD I started using a Moby wrap.  It was cumbersome and hot.  I found that I had to take her in and out so frequently for diaper changes and such that it was just a lot of fabric to deal with.  I got a Boba and LOVE it.  I've used it from the time she was big enough to fit in it and still use it now that she's 28 months.  I have neck trouble, but the Boba doesn't bother my neck, even with a 2 yr old in it for a long trip to the aquarium or something.

The Ergo is very similar, but I hear the infant insert is very hot, so in warmer climates, that might not be the best option until the baby is big enough without the insert.

For this baby, my sister got me the Boba Air.  It's the same as the Boba but a lighter material like a wind breaker.  It has no padding, but fits in a tiny little bag that I can easily take everywhere.  I'm super excited about it.

  • This is on my twins who I adopted at 13 months old. Wearing was the. BEST. THING. EVER. I never bothered with a double stroller, and frequently just wore both. I've heard it all on difficulty in children from orphanages bonding. My girls had issues, but come on, stranger dragging them here, there and beyond in a strange language, ANYONE would have fits. They got good care, so it's not the serious problems some have. I think wearing them snug to my chest as much as possible helped them adjust.

Moby type are ok, but once over 15-20 pounds, the girls didn't feel supported enough.

Woven wraps are our go to still if needing to cling to Momma. Maddie has spent any number of appointments waiting while refusing to look out from the wrap. Easy peasy way to get fussy babies to sleep was to wrap them in a woven in kangaroo care, then wrap a Moby over. I may have walked around in public wearing only two kids and three wraps on top.

Ring slings once they got comfortable sitting in a carrier helped keep them awake. These hold them farther away, so they get to look around at everything.
  • Thank you ladies for the input, I'll have to check out the Mei Tai, Boba and Tula.

I just found an Ergo on Craigslist for $40 and will pick up tonight.  I'm still in need of a wrap though because the infant insert for the Ergo seems to hot to me.  We live in Texas and although she will be a newborn/infant in the spring, it will still be too hot for baby and me/hubby...I think.

I loved the Moby for the newborn/infant stage and Ergo for the infant/toddler stage. We also sometimes use a hiking backpack, but it is a lightweight crotch dangler, so we don't use it much. My friends also let me borrow a Baby Bjorn. It was comfortable up until (I want to say) 20 lbs., and it was also a crotch dangler, so I limited its use.

I am still baby wearing DS at 23 months. I have to walk the dog three times a day and I don't want to haul the stroller up and down our stairs. It's actually turned into a nice way to bond since I'm not BFing anymore. I firmly believe that most children love baby wearing as long as the parents are consistent. I hope you enjoy it. :-)

Thanks for this tip, btw!  I don't think I would have ever thought about that!!  This will make trips to the grocery store a breeze!!

I found an Ergo on Craigslist and a K'tan at a resale shop last night.  The K'tan was my size and only $15, so I nabbed it.  Unfortunately, I can't try it out yet but if I find I don't like it, I'm only out $15! LOL But hubby tried on the Ergo and really liked it.

So excited!  Only 4w2d until my induction!!!

Co-workers are throwing me a shower tomorrow evening.  I think after that, I will be completely ready for baby as far as supplies go.  I just started nesting last week, so I'm sure there is more organizing and decluttering to come. :)

  • I had a Baby K'Tan with my last baby and loved it! Plan on using it even more with this one. My last baby was older when I got it and I wished I would have got it sooner.

  • i have quite a few carriers but the ergos are the ones i use most.  I often wear one on back and one on front!  I did find most of mine did not like to be in the carrier as newborns.  Being up against my chest like that just made them think they needed to nurse and they would start fussing.  SO if your baby isn't liking it at first...just keep trying.
  • I got a Sollywrap for me. I'm a FTM so I have no idea if it is going to work for us or not. The Moby wraps just seemed so thick and I'm pretty hot natured, I don't want to be melting and sweating all over my sweet baby. DH got himself an Ergo with the newborn insert.

I really hope baby wearing works for us. After going some places over Christmas and being stuck in stroller hell, I want to avoid it as much as possible!

Ditto!  We travel pretty regularly, and the babywearing parents always just seem so relaxed compared to the stroller-shleppers. :)

When we were in Patagonia, there was a couple who pretty much "followed" our same hiking circuit over about 10 days. They had a 12-15 month daughter who the mom front-carried (dad carried backpack) the entire time (would have been 50-70 miles), including some pretty rough terrain. I was SO inspired!

I'm excited to try some out - from my research so far, I like the k'tan... but who knows.

  • I loved my Ergo, but am thinking about buying the Tula this time around. I had zero luck with the Moby and the sling. The Bjorn was claimed immediately by my DH.

  • The Ergo looks great. I just learned more about it on YouTube. It looks very versatile and well thought out. I used a ring sling 15 years ago. I was really only able to use it while she an infant and I only used it to do grocery shopping as it wasn't that comfortable for either of us to use for an extended period of time. For walking i used a crotch dangler frame pack I picked up at a yard sale for a couple bucks.  All of that stuff is long gone now...starting over.

I got that one too. What color did you get?
  • I carried twins at 17 and 19 pounds over Switzerland and Italy. Never bothered with a stroller, walked everywhere unless we got a taxi or public transport. Neither girl was walking a lot yet, on the sidewalk they weren't stable at all. I had them on me a good 14 hours a day in some combo, probably 10 with both being carried. For 28 days. From what I saw, baby wearing was socially normal. Strollers weren't practical as far as I could tell, I saw a number of kids being worn, and I was treated as if it was SOP to have two toddlers on me. First time we got more attention for world's most adorable twins (I'm not biased, really) than for why was I so BSC or weird hippie as to want to wear a child, never mind two.

Get a standard response to the stupid questions, that was the biggest challenge in many ways for us. However, my girls started older and not floppy. Which also resulted in more questions on why was I still wearing them.... Best response was from Victoria who was perched on my back and said "We like Mommy more than wheels."

I got the yellow one. But if I like it I may get the grey striped one too! What about you?

@graciest719‌ i got Pacific and it was NOT the color I thought it would be. Looks more aqua online but in person it's teal and looks awful on me. I am exhanging it but not sure which color to get now. I may end up going with plain grey. It's safe. Do you know anyone that has either red or mauve by chance and if they are true to color?
