Metoclopramide

(don't worry mods, I searched and couldn't find a post for meto).
At my first appointment on Friday my midwife decided to take me off zofran (I have HG) and try the b6/unisom combo. After two days of puking or feeling like I was gunna puke my husband called and they decided to switch me to something called Metoclopramide. It apparently stimulates your GI tract (which slows during pregnancy) which is supposed to make your nausea worse. Except...
I've puked five times today. Only one was "productive" and the tight/full/pain feeling in my stomach at night is gone. I'm posting this to see if any other ladies have used this drug.
I already tried those homeopathic/natural remedies and they didn't work. Zofran really worked but the one (really small basically debunked study) has my midwifed thinking its a last resort thing.
I'm praying every minute of every day that my symptoms go away at 12 weeks (which is two weeks ago for me).

Re: Metoclopramide

  • I took it with my last pregnancy, but it didn't work for me by itself. I had hyperemesis last time and the only thing that allowed me to keep down enough food to survive my pregnancy was a combo of Zofran, Reglan (meto), and Phenergan. I think the Reglan was the least effective for me. I eventually was able to take that one out and just do the Zofran and Phenergan.

Have you tried Diclegis? That's what I'm currently taking and it's made for pregnant women. It's been working for maintenance, and then I just take a Zofran on my worst days.

First of all, I'm so happy to hear that someone else went through this guinea pig shit!
My concern with diclegis is that is b6 and unisom. Unisom (even just a half tab) makes me exhausted and cranky.

Yeah, it is definitely a drowsy med. I'd say Reglan is a 2, Diclegis is a 4, and Phenergan is an 8 out of 10 on the drowsiness scale. I'm definitely more tired, and DEFINITELY haven't given up caffeine. One thing about the Diclegis is that most people take two before bed, and many don't need any additional during the day. My body is weird and didn't react that way (I have to take one in the morning and one in the afternoon and none at night), but the starting dose is two pills before bed. Might be worth a try to see if the two before bed is enough.

  • I am taking a combo of Reglan and zofran. Neither works for me alone but the combo helps me function. I still vomit and I still feel nauseated but it's not 24/7.

  • I was hesitant to take Diclegis because of the sedation factor as well, but it doesn't seem to be an issue so far. I am only taking one at noon and 2 at bedtime, but I don't get drowsy after the noon dose. It is a delayed release tablet, so that makes it a little smoother and I think that helps prevent the drowsiness for me.

But honestly, if Zofran works best for you, I'd push my midwife to prescribe it. The literature doesn't say it should be last line, it just says that it should no longer be first line (Diclegis should be first line now). Basically, since there is a category A drug available approved specifically for MS, it should be considered first over a category B drug. But it may not work for everyone so Zofran should still be an available option. Hope you find something that works!

I so agree. I think I'll give this med some time and if it doesn't work I'm gunna just say "give me the zofran or I'll find someone who will"
  • Fwiw. Zofran is still a class b pregnancy drug while phenergan is class c. I Poo poo the study. One small study that apparently doesn't give the fda enough reason to change the pregnancy class
