Leaving 5 mo BF DD for a 4 day business trip

Hi there!
So I am leaving on a 4-day work trip.
I have a lot of frozen BM in the freezer (definitely enough to cover my absence) but I'm looking for a couple of tips/answers?
1. How much should H be ready to feed her in the MOTN?  Right now she takes 3 3-oz bottles while I'm gone during the day (10:30; 1:30; 4:30) and nurses at 6:30, 8pm (for a loooooong time to sleep) and then usually 11/12; 2a/3a; 5/6a; and before I leave I wake her to "top her off" at 7:30a.

2. Any tips for traveling? I have done this before but it was with DS 4 years ago.  I'm nervous.

3. I think much of her waking is just comfort. Should DH try to soothe with paci first? (she takes a paci from others and sometimes will take one from me, but she's not "into" it.. if that makes sense?)

Thanks in advance.

  • My initial thought is that if her daytime bottles were bumped up in either ounces or frequency, she might wake less at night. The general rule is 1 ounce per hour, so if she's gone from you exactly 9 hours from nurse to nurse, 9 oz would be her minimum. Breastfed babies generally need roughly 24-25 oz per day, so that's leaving her needing 15 to 16 ounces while you are together, so it makes sense that she's basically nursing non-stop while you are together and not because she needs comfort.

I'd make sure while you're away that she's getting that 25 ounces in bottles, however you want to break it down.

THANK YOU! This is really helpful.  I leave at 8:15 and get home at 6:15 so it's a 7:30/7:45 nursing to a 6:30 nursing - so 11 hours.  That's about what I'm pumping - I've been freezing the remaining 2 ish ounces.  But I guess I will try adding those to her bottles.

That's perfect, that's what I'd do. I'd try for three, four ounce bottles, or as close as you can get.

While you're away I'd probably have her doing five, four ounces bottles, the three during the day and adding a morning bottle and evening bottle, spacing about every 3 hours. Then, I'd have DH reserve two bottles of about 2.5 ounces for the overnight feedings.

    Good luck!

  • I also wanted to add, you're doing an awesome job pumping and working. I know it's super hard, I did it myself from three months to a year. Keep up the great work!
