I thought I'd do an MLK themed one this week, trying to keep it service related, since my guess is lots of us are involved in such things.

1. Is there and organization you volunteer with regularly? If so how'd you get started; for how long?

2. If you won the lottery or somehow came into lots of money what 2 or 3 organizations or causes you would support? (I know most of us would probably choose to give to MANY, but pretending we have a limit to number not money)

3. Do you have a favorite MLK or service related quote?

4. What's the most meaningful service or philanthropic experience you've had?

1. Is there and organization you volunteer with regularly? If so how'd you get started; for how long?

Sadly, no. I'm a slacker in the volunteering department. I am planning on sending my Girl Scout cookie order to the troops overseas though. I just found out that you can order/pay for them and the Girl Scouts will get them overseas!! I was so excited for this piece of information.

2. If you won the lottery or somehow came into lots of money what 2 or 3 organizations or causes you would support? (I know most of us would probably choose to give to MANY, but pretending we have a limit to number not money)

Operation Gratitude - Care packages to troops overseas.

American Red Cross - Disaster relief services.

PAWS - I love all the animals.

3. Do you have a favorite MLK or service related quote?

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." It reminds me to stay gracious no matter what or who I am facing.

4. What's the most meaningful service or philanthropic experience you've had?

This may not count because it was a paid job, but I used to do case management in a nursing/rehabilitation home and I oversaw the psych and dementia units. Being able to help the residents get back on their feet and get involved in the psychosocial world was extremely rewarding. I miss my residents.

Where I work I run a monthly Teens Volunteer program, I have been doing this for the past 4 years and I have to say it's the most rewarding thing. This year I have based all of our activities around a Rescue Mission in our town and I have found it the most rewarding experience. Last year most of our activities were based around an organization that was started by a local family who lost their son who was a Marine in the line of duty.

Just Like Me and "I Matter" Project (a local project to build self esteem and stop destructive decision making in teens)

3. Do you have a favorite MLK or service related quote?

"Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase."

4. What's the most meaningful service or philanthropic experience you've had?

It refers to question 1. All of my meaningful experiences have stemmed from this volunteer program I run. But the most meaningful was the "I Matter" Project where youth in the community come together and learn about one another and learn how to build up their self worth through photographing each other and writing a personal "I Matter" Statement that goes with their image. The images are than blown up large scale and hung in public places throughout the community to show the community that youth do make a difference. I had one young man that I have known since he was 3 and has always been a shy and quiet person, during the 6 months that we were doing the project, he came out of his shell and spoke about the project at PTA meetings, School board meetings and local association meetings.. That to me was the biggest accomplishment of the entire project.

1. Is there and organization you volunteer with regularly? If so how'd you get started; for how long? I help organize school-based support for the local mobile food truck and food pantry. I help coordinate drives that happen in the two schools I work in, chaperone student volunteers, call families for holiday meal baskets, etc. I'm going on two years now of doing this. It started when I had the son of the executive director of the MFT/food bank.

2. If you won the lottery or somehow came into lots of money what 2 or 3 organizations or causes you would support? The local food pantry/mobile food truck, something involving the local animal shelter, and Alzheimer's.

3. Do you have a favorite MLK or service related quote?

“If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”

4. What's the most meaningful service or philanthropic experience you've had? Last year, my students raised money to sponsor one of the monthly mobile food trucks in the community where I work. A group of them also volunteered to work the truck in the pouring rain and 40° weather. The people there getting food knew the students had raised the money and they were so thankful. Many students afterwards talked about how many times they were thanked, received a handshake or a hug from someone that they carried food for, and they all said it was a life-changing experience for them.

I've been volunteering at the Boys & Girls club for a couple of years.

2. If you won the lottery or somehow came into lots of money what 2 or 3 organizations or causes you would support? (I know most of us would probably choose to give to MANY, but pretending we have a limit to number not money)

I would definitely start or donate to a Foundation to help others fund infertility treatments. I mean this is a cause that is really close to my heart. Before I started to experience IF I thought about saving for my child's college fund, but I never thought I would have to save to have a child.

3. Do you have a favorite MLK or service related quote?

I have two....

"There can be no deep disappointment where there is not deep love"

"Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step."

4. What's the most meaningful service or philanthropic experience you've had?

I really enjoy fundraising for scholarships at my college.

1. Is there and organization you volunteer with regularly? If so how'd you get started; for how long?
My DH and I volunteer for a local little league. I have been doing it for going in six years, my husband has been doing it for about 12 years. He started by Managing our nephew's t-ball team and never looked back. I was DELISH and originally volunteered to spend more time with my husband, but I grew to love it just as much as he does.

2. If you won the lottery or somehow came into lots of money what 2 or 3 organizations or causes you would support? (I know most of us would probably choose to give to MANY, but pretending we have a limit to number not money)
1. Breath of Heaven- which is an orphanage in Africa.
2. Probably a charity that helps couples adopt.

3. Do you have a favorite MLK or service related quote?
"I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service way joy."

4. What's the most meaningful service or philanthropic experience you've had?
Our Bible study group adopted a local family in need one Christmas. Being able to meet them and see the joy in their eyes when we dropped off all of the things we were able to give them was an amazing experience.
