vbac?

With my first pregnancy I had to have an emergency cesarean because my son was stuck pretty badly! Well it ended up getting infected and had to stay open for a while to heal. Im just wondering if any of you moms have had this and still been able to have a vbac?

Re: vbac?

  • Not my personal experience but my best friend just had a VBAC after 2 c sections with complications. If you want to try, start by looking up docs in your area who support and have done VBAC. It may also help to hire a doula who is experienced with VBAC. There is tons of literature out there to help you decide if VBAC is right for you but beware anything that makes it seem all good or all bad. My friend was only in labor for 5 hours and was up and about the next day. With her 2nd kiddo she was stuck in bed for almost 2 weeks! Good luck to you!

  • This is a great question for your doctor or even several doctors for second opinions. It is a major question!!! I wouldn't rely on other women ask your doctor how many vbac a they have seen with that exact kind of situation..... If your doctor has seen it happen with several successful vbac and is comfortable handling that situation you have a yes, if your doctor has not seen successful vbacs the answer is no. I would want a doctors opinion on this and write out all the pros and cons for myself.... Hard decision but ultimately your best source will be asking medical professionals... It won't matter if any of us have had successful vbacs after complications because we aren't delivering you... Best of luck though, I myself will be trying for a vbac if possible and I've had lots of discussions with my doctor already with lots more discussions coming. Good luck!!! Be thorough and take notes with your doc!
  • I am also considering a vbac but I had no complications with my c/s. I would talk to your dr. Also check and see if there is an ICAN chapter in your area. They would have the best info on vbac friendly dr s and hospitals. My dr wants me to vbac more than I do so I know I will be well supported. A supportive care provider and supportive birth team (husband, Dula etc.) is your best bet for success!

  • I tried for a vbac and failed but I am really glad I tried--I would have always wondered. It wasn't an easy experience (my bladder tore during pushing and I was rushed into surgery)but I am really glad I tried.

This time around I am having a planned c and feel really good about it too.

I would say vbac or not you just need to be secure In your decision either way. Decide what is best for you and your family and be settled with that decision.

    Good luck!

  • I agree with PP - talk with your doctor and get their opinion. If they don't think it's a good idea, why not? If they have a very strong medical concern why you wouldn't make a good candidate then I would trust your doctor.

Also if you don't have a doctor that will try a VBAC just because they aren't comfortable with a VBAC in general look at your local ICAN chapter to find a doctor and get their opinion.

I had a CS with my first due to failure to progress and had a very easy non problematic recovery so I am hoping that this time around I can VBAC. I've looked into it and talked to my doctor several times. The hospital I will deliver with is VBAC friendly and they will try to help me as long as everything is looking ok and both me and baby are safe. The only thing my doc told me is that I have to go into labor on my own (I was induced the first time) and I have only two weeks after my due date for that to happen - at that point I will have to have a RCS.

    Good luck!!
