Average Cost for Nanny?

Hi!  We just found out we are expecting our third child.  We have twin girls that are in kindergarten.  As we wrap our heads around our new reality, we are thinking about child care.

Does anyone know what the average cost for a nanny would be?  We would need someone for 9 hours per day for the baby + after school for the girls.  I know it can vary widely, but any experiences would be great!

Thanks!

PS - We live near Annapolis.

Re: Average Cost for Nanny?

  • It will vary a lot based on the age and experience of the nanny, extra work (household upkeep, cooking, running errands, etc.) but you are probably looking at $400 - $600 per week.

we were looking in white marsh hardford county and have two kids. The average rate for an above board nanny was around $20.00 an hour not counting the additional employeer tax or any insurance we would need to carry such as workers comp.

  • Check out care.com, they have a calculator that lets you account for location and experience.  We live in the Odenton area and pay ours $12/hour for 2 days/wk, which is actually on the lower end of pay around here.

  • You may want to consider an au pair.  I have a dear friend who came to the US as an au pair several years back.  The benefits of an au pair- extended hours, live in help, cost benefit for multiples, light housework and cooking expected.  There are cons, however- generally they must have their own bedroom and bathroom (can share with the kids) & access to your vehicle.  But with 3 little ones, this could definitely be a beneficial option based on cost alone.  I believe the rate was previously approx $1200 monthly.
    Good luck and congrats!
  • I'm a nanny(nanny share) and get paid $550 a week (before taxes). I work 9.5 hours a day, 5 days a week in howard county, caring for two kids ages 7 months and 15 months. According to care.com I should be making 12.50 an hour but I settled for 11 because the job was so perfect. Factors that raise the cost of a nanny: more experience, caring for newborns, and location (pretty sure Annapolis would have higher rates). Just wanted to give you a bit of firsthand information. Hope it helps, and good luck!
  • @BellaBrideAP‌ I make 2,030 monthly and that's still a bit less than what I should be paid. If you pay anyone less than 2000 a month, for more than one child, you are ripping them off. Especially for full time hours. You can get away with paying them less if they're living with you but it's still not right to underpay people, especially if you think you can do so because they're from a different country. Just something to keep in mind and make sure to do adequate research on. Also, not saying "you" as if I'm accusing you, I'm just speaking generally.
  • It may be worth checking your area/neighborhood for SAHMs who may be interested extra income. We have a neighbor who watches our LO 3 days/wk in our home for substantially less than a full time daycare. Daycare cost here (harford/cecil cty) averages $1000-1200/mo fulltime for an infant. Full time nannies averaged around $400/wk. At $2000/mo, I couldn't even justify going to work. Wishing you well on finding a solution that works for you - this was one of my biggest stresses in preparing for LO.
