How many of you had an ultrasound at your first appointment? My first appointment will be at 8w4d and while I really do want an US I was told to not expect one.

Re: US at first appointment.

  • With my first, I didn't have an ultrasound at the first appointment. I did have an ultrasound at the first appointment with my second. Just depends on the practice.

  • U/S's are usually given that early to date the pregnancy, if you had a hard time getting pregnant, you have a history of loss or there are complications.  If you know your dates and don't have any of these other issues, don't expect to see an U/S until your anatomy scan around 20w.  With both of my pregnancies, I didn't get an U/S until 16 weeks and that was just to check my cervix since I had a LEEP procedure 5 years ago.

Yes, I know that some doctors do an U/S at, what seems like, every appointment, but that is not a standard practice.  Please don't make something up (it's been suggested on here before) in order to get an U/S done.  Be happy that you are pregnant, don't have complications and don't have a loss history.  There's nothing they can do to stop something from happening this early on, anyways.

  • No I didn't, it was basic blood work, family history. My U/S was booked for another date at that appointment.
  • In Canada, there's typically an ultrasound at 12 weeks. With my second pregnancy (AL), my dr sent me in for an ultrasound earlier (I think around 7 or 8 weeks). We also do anatomy scans at around 20 weeks.
  • I had an ultrasound at 7 weeks and another at 10 weeks at my OB's office. They have an ultrasound machine in-house and  it was too early to hear the heartbeat with the doppler. I also had a 12 week scan as part of my NT screening, and I just had my 20 week anatomy scan. I'm getting at least one more before I give birth (based on what the Dr told me).

I know that it's not very common to have so many ultrasounds, but I don't mind :)

  • Yes, the practice I go to does what they call a "viability scan" if you have had more than one early loss (which I did unfortunately have).

But your practice is telling you it's not something they do, so it won't matter what any of us had.

For low risk women my practice does a dating ultrasound around 8 weeks, the NT scan at 12 weeks (unless you opt out of it) and the anatomy scan at 18-20 weeks. However the only truly necessary scan, especially if your periods are regular and you know your dates, is the anatomy scan.

In fairness, I temp so i knew my dates exactly, but because I ovulated day 31 of the cycle where I got pregnant I had a dating scan anyway. I think my doctor just assumes no one does the temping work and is just guessing when they tell her that they know when they ovulated. I'm sure she's been burned on that before. I actually had to fight with a nurse and refuse to come in until 10 weeks based on lmp because they would originally only schedule me for 8w lmp and since I ovulated late that would have been way too early to do or see anything.
  • I didn't have one at my first appointment, but my doctor did set up a dating ultrasound for a week later to confirm how far along I was. I was fairly certain of my dates and the u/s confirmed them.

  • My first appointment was general history, urine/blood work. I did have my U/S at my second appointment and I was 7w6d. Im sure it depends on your Dr and their practice. Thank God I didn't have to wait until 20 weeks to hear and see my little peanut. I would not expect to have an U/S at the first appointment because the second appointment  we went over finances prior to any procedures and payment of future procedures.

  • I had one at my first appointment however my fist appointment was at 8 weeks and I have a history of loss so that may be why they did it but as pps have said it depends on your doctor. You will have one at some point and I'm not going to lie it's a very exciting moment in your pregnancy ;)
  • I had an ultrasound at 7 weeks, OB sent me in to the hospital to have one because of cramping and spotting. Had another at 12 weeks (NT scan), and have to have another at 16 weeks because I have marginal placenta previa and they want to make sure it moves up like it's supposed to.
  • Hey guys! First time preggers here & 9w along. I have my first appointment tomorrow afternoon and I'll be getting a U/S. I have some medical history that could result in a high risk pregnancy and i'm 33 and it's my first ever pregnancy, so maybe that's why they're having me do one right off the bat? Not sure, just know that I'm UBBER excited to hear the heartbeat! :)
  • We elected to have the 12 week NT scan, so at our first appt we had an ultrasound done to date the pregnancy so that they could do the NT scan as close to the 12 week mark as possible. Therefore, I had an US at 9 weeks (saw and heard heartbeat), at 12 weeks (was cool to see the growth), at 20 weeks for anatomy scan, a follow up at 22 weeks to get the rest of the measurements they couldn't get the first time.

I also did a couple of "for fun" ultrasounds at around 36 weeks as a volunteer for ultrasound students at my workplace. I knew the program director and knew the students would have a blast scanning a real person instead of their dummy. My baby turned out perfect (for those who worry about having too many ultrasounds).
  • My doctor's office did not used to do them unless needed for some reason. I had one with my 1st DD at 5,6,7 weeks because of dating issues and HCG number problems. My 2nd DD also I had one at 7 weeks because my lmp did not match up with my ovulation date and they didn't believe my dates. My 3rd I was pretty set on all my dates and didn't have one until 12 weeks when my doc "couldn't find the heartbeat on his Doppler" but they just used the little portable device to check in there.

My 4th the office has changed their procedures. They do one in office at first appointment and I will get it next week at 8w3 day.

  • In my opinion now you don't even want a early ultrasound at your first apt.... I was 5 weeks and 5 days when I went in the first time to make sure I was pregnant and they also did an ultrasound and told me I'd be able to see everything (sac, yolk sac, HB, fetal pole) and was devastated when I only saw the sac and yolk sac. Then the doctor told me I was miscarrying! Let's just say now I have a new doctor and everything is going perfect!
