Weekly physical therapy for urinary incontinence. Telling boss?

So, I pee myself. I've had two kids and after I pee (even when I try really hard to empty) I dribble into my pants. I wear a panty liner all the time. I told my midwife and they set me up for physical therapy, weekly at lunch time and it's an hour. Anyone ever do this? What was it like? Secondly, should I try to tell my boss? What could I say that wouldn't lead to more questions? Or I could just pass it off as a long lunch. No one really monitors when I am here anyway. I'm a lawyer, so the billable hour is my bottom line and not my time in the office.
My TTC History:
2009: missed miscarriage #1 at 9 weeks (trisomy 16)
2010: Infertility
2011: Diagnosis and treatment (low sperm count, anastrozole for DH, clomid for me + IUI)
2012: Baby #1
2014: Baby #2
October 2015: missed miscarriage #2 at 11 weeks (trisomy 22)
March 2016 BFP#5, due November 2016.

No. No. No. No. Do not tell your boss. You're not legally required to, so why bother? Just let them know that you have a weekly medical appointment during your lunch break, and you may possibly require some longer lunches.
    This.
If it makes you feel better, I may be with you in a little bit.  I kegeled the heck out of myself after DS to stop this same challenge. It worked after a bit.  I'm currently trying to do the same after DD... I think I'm making progress.

Two giant babies with 95th+ percentile heads delivered vaginally really f's with your body.

Bwah ha ha!! I didn't mean tell him that I pee myself. I meant tell him that I have this appointment at all. I feel like if I tell him i have to go to the doctor once a week, he'll either think I'm pregnant or ask for details.

Oh thank god. You never know on the internets,

Medical appointment is all I would tell him, especially since there's the possibility it will cut into work hours. Beyond that, he's not legally obligated to know, so that's all he needs to know. You may want to clarify with him that it's ongoing health and not related to anything specific. (I had a friend put "doctor's appointments" on her calendar while she was interviewing.. her boss was CONVINCED she must have cancer or something like that.)
I'm not sure what you mean to imply when you say 'ongoing health' and not anything specific. Is this your way if saying it's not for pregnancy?

  • Assuming this is something that could be corrected in a month or two I would alternative taking an unexplained long lunch with other random appointments.  Something like:

    Week 1:  Long lunch
    Week 2:  Dentist
    Week 3:  Long lunch
    Week 4:  Eye Doctor
    Week 5:  Long Lunch
Week 6:  Take kid to dentist
    Week 7:  Long Lunch
    Week 8:  DMV license renewal
  • If no one monitors when you're there and it doesn't actually matter when you're there if still meeting your billable he expectations, why say anything at all? It would be different if it were several times a week but will anyone notice if it is a long lunch hour every week? Being vague just opens it up for speculation by people in my opinion, so I would either not even mention it or lie and say you're doing PT for some back pain you've been having...

  • I would just say you have a PT appointment and f asked for what id say that you have some issues from pregnancy/child birth that you're getting corrected. Most think that means back/hip pain. Or just say you have a standing appt and don't give details. You're billable, so it doesn't really matter. But I would tell them something so that they don't book an appt/meeting for you during that time (if you don't do your own scheduling).

As for what PT will do. It's likely you will do pelvic floor exercises and training. If possible, search for a womens health PT clinic. You can search online or call a PT clinic and specifically ask of the therapists specialize in women's health issues. Each therapist is drastically different and it really does matter - example - you don't want a PT that specializes in shoulders or knees that may not have the most up to date knowledge in the area you need. Make sense?

    Best of luck to Ya!

My midwife referred me, so I'm sure it's a women's health specialist. Thanks!!

  • Since I'm a hater of all feminine pads, this must be the suck. Best of luck to you. I truly hope PT solves the issue.

  • If questioned, you could do what I did with our general counsel when I was pregnant and just say, "If you ask me again, I swear to God I will tell you. And neither of us wants that." He never asked another question again. (But then this is someone who is easily embarrassed by female issues, so some other female attorneys and I have a running joke that the first one to say "tampon" in front of him gets $500.)

100% this. And yes, if asked, just a general comment about PT. Back pain is good- vague. Or "Oh- it's for an old (shoulder/ankle/knee) issue that's bugging me again".
  • I think it really depends on your work situation. If you think he wouldn't care about you taking a long lunch then I wouldn't say anything. If you think it could be an issue then I would casually mention that you have physical therapy sessions once a week at lunch and not volunteer what the therapy sessions are for - he will likely assume that it's for your back or something.
