Crying

My twins are a little over 5 weeks old and they cry with everything, changing diapers, baths, if I am late a second to feed they have melt downs, even during feedings, or if they hear each other cry, i know babies cry but it feels like it's all the time. I am usually alone all day so it's hard to manage at times. Is this how most babies are???

No, I don't think so. There are colicky, "high needs", & reflux babies. Maybe it's that? Sorry to hear. That must be very stressful. Can you try things to soothe like swaddling, baby wear, white noise? Hope you have an extra pair of hands at times to give you a break.

I understand. One of my twins cries less but the other one cries a lot. As they get older and can amuse themselves when they are awake I feel like it should get easier. I know it did with my 3yr old DS.

I also am alone all day. I have found that going out for a walk is nice if the weather is decent. Or going to a friends house to visit. Today we were gone most of the day and they were little angels, I think they like napping in their car seats. And I was happy to have such a smooth day.

My second set of twins are 8 weeks and they cry a lot too. I don't think it has to be colick or reflux. I think sometimes it's just different baby temperaments. Keep trying different things like swaddling, white noise, low lighting, limit noise, feeding on demand, propping them up after eating, different sleep positions etc all four of my babies have not been easy babies, they cry when changed or woken up or if they aren't held. Some women luck out and get the content angel baby, but just because you have two de adding babies doesn't mean it's colick or reflux. I comfort myself by saying my babies will just have strong personalities

I had one crier - she is 12 months and still starts crying the minute she sees a bottle, even though we are on our way to put it in her mouth. Same with diaper changes. Total drama queen. That said, it gets better. At about 12 weeks it changes and they start interacting and you can calm the crying. In the meantime, watch a youtube video of "happiest baby on the block" and it will show you some tricks.

There were times I wish I had earplugs to go change Josie's diaper.

She's also funnier, laughing louder, and has the biggest smiles, so there's that.

At 5 weeks, my babies were pretty short on patience. They screamed at diaper changes and baths and wailed if it took more than 1 minute for a bottle. Notice I speak in the past tense. They've mellowed out as they've gotten older, so it really does get better.

Do not be ashamed to put on ear plugs or headphones and listen to your favorite music during the crying. It doesn't drown them out completely, but it takes the edge off. Just because you respond to the crying doesn't mean you have to listen to each and every excruciating note.

For diaper changes, try getting a wipes warmer. It helped us a lot. For baths, make sure to keep them covered with warm washcloths (or the warming cloths that came with the tub) and if your bath fan has a heater on it, use it. Also, put their towels and pj's in the dryer so they're nice and warm as soon as they get out of the tub.

Finally, get your hands on the video version of the Happiest Baby on the Block and learn the techniques for the 5 S's. The 5 S's turned off our babies' crying like a switch, and at 4 months, we still use some of them. You might be able to find clips on Youtube. Also, look up "Purple Crying". It helped me get perspective that what I was dealing with was normal and temporary.

Thank you for your replies! I watched the happiest baby on the block and I am so happy I did! What a difference the twins actually slept for three hours straight! That's a miracle , this is first night so far so I have to see how the rest of the night will go but wow I am impressed. THank you again I hope this will continue to work

I'm so glad we could help. I will give one word of caution on HBTB, in that there is the chance that some of the 5S's will become sleep crutches, so that the babies won't sleep without them. Between 4 to 6 months, you may have to wean them. We didn't learn HBTB until our babies were 2 months, they're now 4 months, and they gave up the swaddles on their own, and spit out their paci's when they fall asleep. We still use white noise, but only so we can still make noise in the rest of the house without waking them up. For us the challenge is to wean off being rocked to sleep.

Your babies are still super-young, so they'll have plenty of time to self-wean before you have to worry about it, but it's just something to keep in mind.
