Traveling with a sick kid

Ugh. Poor B. We've had such a great time here in DC, but she started running a really high fever before bed. We gave her baby Motrin and will see how she's doing in the am.

DH is driving back tI Chicago and starts his drive after dropping B and me at the airport for our 8:30pm flight tomorrow.

Here's my question. If she still feels like crap tomorrow, do I navigate an airport and two hour flight solo with a sick baby? Or, do we all drive home starting tomorrow, with a stop overnight in OH?

Both seem like crap options, right?

Re: Traveling with a sick kid

  • If she likes the carseat and you think she might sleep with the medicine I might do the drive. DD doesn't like her carseat so I'd choose to fly because driving would be more torturous for her.

Sigh, they have the body temp scans in most of the airports I've been to in Asia so it would be a nightmare if either of us has a fever going home flying through Japan.

  • I personally would rather deal with a sick kiddo in a car seat because you control more of the space around you. And you wouldn't be exposing everyone else on the plane to her bug. Plus, J loves his carseat and with some medicine he'd just sleep and watch his shows on the iPad.

Hope she feels better soon and whichever option you choose! GL!

  • While the flight would get you home quicker---at least in the car you can stop whenever you need to and you will have your husband with you. Not to scare you---but at least in the car, if her fever spiked too high you could pull over to a hospital and get her care. On a plane, unless there is a doctor on board you are limited to what you can do in flight.

Driving at night isn't always super fun. But I would try and take turns with my DH and do most of the drive at night if we could. The bonus about a sick kid---they usually do alot of sleeping. That could work out in your favor.

Good luck and hope your LO feels better soon.

  • Thanks ladies. We decided to drive! I just didn't want to have the poor thing stuck on a plane, feeling like crap.
