Crib Issues?

Hi everyone! I'm a first time mom, and am totally second guessing myself. :( I hope someone has some advice or even just some commiseration!

My LO is 15 weeks old, and breast fed. As an infant he slept 4-7 hours in his swing in the basement (finished, it's not a dungeon I swear!) so finally I just moved the swing to the guest bedroom and started sleeping in there. Lately his sleep has gotten so much worse. He won't sleep more than four hours on a very good night. I've tried the swing and a co-sleeper attached to my bed. The co-sleeper is a total bust, and the swing is really hit and miss.

My big question is how to get him into the crib! He will nap for 45~ minutes in there during the day and wake up happy and cooing...but at night he'll sleep that length of time and wake up SCREAMING. I watched him closely on the monitor three nights in a row - dead sleep to screaming, no fussy period at all! Of course I go to him every time, and I've tried to feed him and soothe him and put him back to sleep, but he'll wake screaming again in less than an hour. :(

I've been mostly cosleeping, which I totally don't mind doing, but in the back of my mind I keep thinking he'll be in my bed forever, and what will I do when we have another baby?

Any insight? We do use a white noise machine and the merlin suit. The first time I put him down for the night its drowsy but awake, but during the night he tends to fall asleep eating. He also uses a pacifier and I can sometimes squeeze another hour out of him if I replace it.

Oh gosh I don't even know what I'm asking :) Do I need to push the crib now while he's young?

  • it be a temperature change? maybe to warm now? Give it a few days took about 3 for our LO to transition rooms.

  • Mine isn't quite as old, 13 weeks, but I've been struggling a little to adapt to sleep changes lately. He uses a pacifier and sleeps well with it but I got burnt out a while ago on waking up and popping it back in his mouth every time he'd wake up missing it. I just had to find something else to try. My decision was that he needed to start learning to self soothe, but I thought gently teaching him was better than letting him CIO (he's too young for that anyway).

I've become a massive fan of loveys. We got him one for Christmas and I've been working with him with it since then and starting to really see big results. We started mostly when he'd be falling asleep, I'd tuck it under his arm to block his hands from his mouth (he's horrible about gagging himself). Later I figured out when I was soothing him to wind him down for sleep I'd gently stroke the lovey on his cheek. Now I've watched him sleeping and he'll wake up, fuss and flail about a bit until he finds his lovey, then he's snuggle and nuzzle it until he drops back to sleep. It's been a life saver for me especially since he stopped liking swaddling around three weeks.
  • if he is breast feed only he might be waking up so much because he gets hungry try nursing him righ away when he wakes up crying at night. i personaly have him sleeping in the bed with me its just easier for him to nurse right away and he would not wake up as much. now that he is sleeping longer i try putting him in the crib so he gets used to it. also during the day he takes his naps in the crib so he knows and gets used to it.
