Ok sorry in advance this is a gross weird question and I know nobodies a vet or anything like that, just wanted to see if anybodys encountered this before.

My female dog was sitting next to me on the couch when the foulest most disgusting smell ever came to my attention! Like really rotten nasty vajayjay smell.... and when she got up rhere was a damp spot where her butt was. Dr Google has said everything from vagina cancer to doggie UTI to doggie yeast infection. I don't want to take her to the vet cause she seems fine not acting wierd at all just stinks. Also my vets ridiculously expensive. Anyway anybody else have this problem with their dog and what happened? Should I get her some cranberry juice? Lol

Re: To all the mommas with furbabies! Help!? Update page 2

  • No dragging just really excessive gross butt/coochie licking. @hbanana18‌
  • Loading the player...
  • I really hope not... Last time we took a dog in for that they tried to "teach me how to do it at home" just no way in hell could I put fingers in my dogs ass...
  • That would be the anal glands! My moms pomeranians were the worst! The male would just let 'em blow and you'd see the wet spot if he was sitting. Her female just scootches her ass on the carpet to release them... WORST SMELL EVER!
  • @staciecoffey‌ Yes! The smell! So if ya'll are right about the butt glands thing can she just take care of it herself? The reason we took the other dog to the vet for it was because he was too big to reach his own ass...
  • Sometimes they need to be extracted by the vet. Most of the time when it happens to my dogs it goes away after a good solid poop.

I describe the smell of clogged anal glands as a metallic fishy smell. It's awful.

Yep I literally almost threw up on her... So now that I'm pretty certain its anal glands the real question is how do I get rid of this DAMN SMELL!!! I've Lysoled I've scrubbed that part of the couch clean burning every candle in the house and she's not even in the living room anymore and I can't get rid of the smell!!!! Maybe preggo nose, but for the love of all that is right in the world the SMELL!!!

Also p.s. am I the only one who thinks smell is a weird looking word?
  • @pickles26 I'll try it! The dog looks very embarassed?(spelling is hard) right now lol.

My vet charges $20 to do it, and it takes about 2 minutes. Our vet also taught my mom how to do it herself, because an old dog of hers had a very, very bad problem. But she says it's absolutely disgusting. The smell you're smelling now is no where near how terrible it is when it's OUT. But, if they're going to charge you more than that or if you don't have the budget for it regularly, it may be worth it to you to learn how to do it yourself.

We have to take our baby in to have them "released" about once/month.

  • Spray with vinegar and let dry. whisk up some hot water with dawn and regular tide, and use the lather to scrub the offending spot. Don't rinse, just let dry. Then vacuum.
As for the dog, a trip to the vet is probably your best bet. If they get plugged, they can get infected and abscess. And then a high fiber diet (raw bones are great too!). At the vet I used to work for, if the dog was current on shots (seen within the year), the appt isn't for a full physical with a dr, just a quick trip to the back room with a tech to express the glands (glove up and, you know, dig in), and then wipe clean. Separate charge completely!
    Good luck!
  • @wegrowsheep‌ thank you! Apparently it is just my pregnant nose according to DH but I'm still going to clean the ever lovin out of that cushion! And Ill call the vet and see if she'll charge me for a whole visit or just the part with her pooper. :)@elbowpasta‌
  • We actually sometimes call my dog named Pancake, Fish Ass. Wooooorst smell ever!! If I smell it or see her starting to lick, I immediately let her outside. Their anal glands are supposed to express on their own when they poop and that usually fixes it for mine. If you see your dog poop and the smell hasn't improved, I would call the vet as others have said. Catching them in the act of licking is the hardest part! I always use dish soap and it seems to take care of it. Not going to lie, sometimes it just needs time to totally go away :(. So gross!
  • My English bulldog has problems with his every couple months for a few weeks. We had the vet express them but it didn't really seem to help. He really enjoys doing it on blankets or the leather couch.
If it happens again wipe it up as fast as possible. I love Nature's Miracle for all things dog related and found that it works well for "juicing" as we can it in our family.
  • Sounds like she needs her booty gland expressed to me! This happens to my dog occasionally. My vet does it for me. Lol.
  • PP mentioned it, but I'll second: a decent groomer will do it as part of a normal groom. It's just part of the routine.
  • I would take her to the groomer but the only one that will accept her in my area puts a giant muzzle on her and straps her down like shes vicious or something. (Shes a pit mix and very sweet theyre stereotyping her for no reason) So the vets my only real option.

    Quote fail.

I hate that crap. My peekapoo is probably a bigger PITA than most pits I know.
  • Our pug has issues with his anal glands. He has to get them expressed every two months. He has allergies. Some dogs are more prone to it. You can probably have a vet tech do it instead of making an appointment with the vet. It would be less money. We give him half a fiber capsule with every meal. That has helped a lot. The smell is horrific! Good luck.

Yep! They loved her when she was a tiny widdle puppy and you couldnt tell her breed, now they look at her and back up. SMH at dumbass people.

Oh and Update: think the giant gross dump she took earlier helped lol.
  • My lab/Germany sheppard mix has this problem...it happens when she barks excessively when someone rings the doorbell. It smells like a raunchy potent fishy smell. Totally puke worthy! But it is from the force of her barking causing her anal glands to express. You can take your dog to the vet and have them check them. She may need some help if they are clogged. Oh yeah...and nothing makes it go away:((.

  • If she isn't spayed heat cycles also sink to high heaven. And be the reason for licking and wetness.

Dad's a vet. It's anal glands, far as I can tell. And yes.. it smells freaking awful. You can get them removed if you want or squeeze them out every month or so. Nothing to worry about or be concerned with. That said, you should definitely go to the vet or at least call them if you are concerned about something. It may be expensive sometimes, but your pet deserves it. :)

I second getting this taken care of immediately. If they get impacted or rupture it is a miserable existence for the dog and can lead to sepsis then death. Butts man, They are nothing to mess with.
PCOS- finally pregnant after 3 years of IF treatment, including 4 failed IUI.

Urinary tract infections/bladder stones/bladder cancers are more common in females however other symptoms you would likely see in that case would be frequent urination in small amounts. In some cases you might actually see blood if they urinate. If you are not seeing some of these symptoms, these are not likely culprits however always possible especially if she is licking her vulva and not her rectum excessively.

I have also seen dogs with inverted vulvas or dogs who are overweight who end up with vaginal fold infections around that site as well.

Most veterinarians will not just remove the anal glands as there can be complications with the rectal muscles post surgical experience and only leave this as a last result. Anal gland impactions can be quite serious if left unattended so if the licking does continue you should have her examined. If it were to rupture - well pain medication and a course of antibiotics AND regular expression maybe required.

Many veterinarians will also allow their technicians (veterinary nurses if you will) perform anal gland expressions without charging a full examination - something to speak to your veterinarian's office about.

  • Sounds like expressed anal glands. Certain breeds are more prone to it. You can simply take her to the vet or even the groomer to have them expressed. My 2 guys go to the groomer once a month and the anal gland expression is included in the price of a standard bath and nail trim.
  • It's def her anal glands! This happens to my dog and it's the worst smell in the world. She might just have to poo. Once you start having your dogs anal glands expressed you have to continue to do it. The groomer could do it for you, I know you said they treat her like a wild beast but it only takes a few seconds and dogs actually usually like it lol. Good luck to you and stinky Butt!
  • Update: took her to a groomer my friend recommended and they were way nicer to her than the other place. Cost me less than the vet and alot less than the other groomer was going to charge me this time. They said give her more fiber. (Her food is gluten free so apparently it doesnt have enough.) Carrots for treats from now on! Good thing she likes veggies.
  • Glad it worked out!

I think pumpkin is also good for supplementing fiber in dogs.

Thanks I'll try it! She loves brussel sprouts so I don't see her being too picky about most anything at this point.
  • Carl the bulldog loves pumpkin mixed in with his food. Our vet recommends 2-3 tablespoons to help with fiber. It also works for diarrhea and constipation. He has a very sensitive tummy so if we give him anything outside of his dog food (including treats) it goes straight through him.Too many carrots upset him too so be careful.
    Good luck!
  • Anal glands, yes. We experienced that with our puppy a few months after we adopted her. I would bring her to work and she'd leave little wet spots on my pants after a nap. The smell is HORRENDOUS. We have to take her in every few months to have it expressed. The first time, I was in the room with her and almost vomited all over the table. Not pleasant for me or her.
