Zoe Zoey or Zooey

We know our daughter will be named some version of Zooey Francis. But I am stumped on the correct spelling. All 4 of our children are named after literary figures and this child will be no different. In this case she will be named for characters in a JD Salinger short story.

My issue is that the character uses the Zooey spelling which is not the most common and actually considered to be the Male spelling of the name. (Although it has become more mainstream with actress Zooey Deschanel ) My oldest child is named Dagny which is not a name you see often so the different spelling appealed to me, I was curious what others think. Would you just go ahead and spell it as the character does or use a more common spelling either Zoe or Zoey?

I prefer Zoey.

Double oo makes me think zoo-ee. Which is odd, and probably only I would think that.

The Greek spelling is Zoe. The Y is not there in Greek and the Salinger spelling is ludicrous. I would never use a spelling other than Zoe.

I used Zoey and regret not going with Zoe. It's unfortunate I had to compromise with dh.

Zoe is my dog's name and that's how I spell it. I am Greek so no other way to spell it makes sense to me. However, my co worker named their daughter Zoey. It works for them
