DH broke his ankle

We're in the mountains for our last trip before baby and he broke his ankle snowboarding (while I was at the Spa). I'm just about 31 weeks pregnant and dr says he needs to be in a boot on crutches (no weight bearing, no driving) for 6 weeks. This was supposed to be the time we're getting ready for baby and socking money away like thieves but now I'm stressed about going on mat leave and him being on disability (2/3 of his normal wage) on top of him not being able to help with things when I need the help the most (walking the dogs, shovelling snow, taking out garbage etc). Sorry for the whinny post, I just needed to vent because DH already feels so bad I don't want him to know how stressed I'm feeling.

Re: DH broke his ankle

  • I'm sorry, that super sucks for both of you. :hugs:
  • Loading the player...
  • Sorry that sound super stressful!!!
  • So sorry about your DH. :( Maybe you can put him on 'research duty'? Find anything you still don't have yet, figure out the best options for stuff you may have on your mind, etc. If he feels useful, it'll probably let him feel better, and that will give you one less thing to worry about.

So many ((hugs)) to you, mama.
  • Sorry to hear about your DH! Hopefully while he has this time at home he can help you with the house work or research duty like @DragonflyDreaming‌ suggested. Can you go talk to your neighbors and explain your situation in case it snows and you do need help? Maybe someone on your street would be willing to help out. I hope your DH has a fast recovery!
  • Oh man! I have been there with DH when DS was a year...there will still be things he can help with! Have him fold clothes to put away, etc. good luck and hopefully he'll have a fast recovery!

  • Oh no! So sorry! Not sure if this is the same in Canada (that's where you are - right?) but in the US being on disability doesn't mean that you make that much less money even though you are paid a fraction of your salary. I was on disability for 6m last year and while my paycheck a were slightly smaller because I was only getting paid at 60%, it wasn't too bad. It was all of my medical and hospital expenses that broke the bank.

Some disability payments are not subject to tax. So it's really just the piece you would normally pay to taxes that you lose. The downside - again at least in the US - is that you have to pay for the benefits that your employer gives you out of pocket. My big one was health insurance - so maybe in Canada you don't have to worry about that!

Hopefully Canada tax works this way! I am so sorry you are having to deal with this!

  • Oh no! Prayers for quick healing for him and peace of mind for you. That just plain sucks :(
  • I'm sorry this happened :( I hope he heals quickly!
  • Oh crap, that is really awful timing. Make sure to tell your DH to follow doctor's orders instead of helping you out prematurely. You guys need that break healed asap.

It's too bad about the money thing, I totally get that. But if he's on disability, maybe it means he'll be able to help with some more things around the house before baby comes so you don't have to. Washing & folding baby clothes, chopping food to prep meals... If he's fit enough to snowboard, I'm imagining he can do these one-legged.

Hugs. You can do it, lady!

  • Ugh that's awful! I'm sorry :( I'd definitely enlist the help of eager kiddos for yard work and the dog walking if you can. They'll typically do it for cheaper than a service and are happy to get the money :)
  • That's crappy for both of you! I hope he heals quickly (and before baby arrives). Agree with PPs, hopefully neighbors can help with outside stuff.

  • Oh no! FX for a quick Recovery for your DH & that you get some time after he's 2-footed again to get things ready!!
  • That really sucks. As @Skrittens‌ said, the money usually comes close to evening out because it's not taxed. I imagine you ate sooooo frustrated! I hope he heals well and finds ways to be helpful :(
  • Oh no! That really sucks. I'd echo what pp said about looking for help from neighborhood kids for snow removal, dog walking, etc. Good luck!

  • I'm so sorry!  That majorly sucks.  Hopefully once he gets the hang of the crutches he'll still be able to help out some.  Plus his hands still work, so he can still give back rubs and foot rubs!

  • Oh no, that sucks! My DH was in a boot last winter and I had to do most things around the house, walking dogs, shoveling etc., I am sorry you now have this added stress just a few weeks before delivery!

  • Oh no! What crappy timing. Hoping for a speedy recovery! Like pp said maybe he can help you with stuff around the house.
  • He's not having any pain, but already is feeling so useless, we had freezing rain last night so it isn't safe for him to take the dogs out and he tried to give the dogs water this morning and spilt it all over the place. I feel so bad for him, and I'm trying to be positive and encouraging but this is going to be a long 6 weeks. Oh and his work called and he doesn't qualify for disability payments so he can go on unemployment but for that to happen he has to "quit" his job, so no benefits. DH pays our $2000 mortgage and $700 car payment, unemployment definitely does not pay that much a month. Thankfully we have a really good savings, but this isn't how I pictured using it.
