Glucose test

Ok so when do you normally take your Glucose test? I'm 22 weeks and will only be 23 when I take it. All of my friends and family that have previously had children said they shouldn't test until 25 to 28 weeks. How true does that stand with you all?

Re: Glucose test

  • My doctor is having me wait until my 28 week appointment. I'm at 25 now, good luck though! I hear the drink is not so pleasant :(

  • My doctor is having me do it at my 27 week appointment. The drink really isn't that bad!

I'm taking mine today, at 25 weeks exactly. My doctor gave me a range of 24-28 weeks when it should be done, so I'm just taking care of it at this appointment.

    ...and I'm scared :(

ETA: This is the range I was given as "typical," although I'm sure doing it one week sooner makes absolutely no difference. Trust your doctor.
  • My office has you do it between 24 and 28 weeks, and I recently read that new recommendations want you to donut closer to 24. I did mine at 24w4days. I don't think doing it a bit early would mess with the results, though, because sometimes they test women who look like they're at an increased risk for GD a little earlier than that.

Yep, this. My OB/midwife practice follows the new recommendations and asked me to do it close to 24w, so I will be going on Monday, at 24+3.

  • My OB also told me between 24-28, so she had me double-check with the scheduling team since we had already booked all of the appointments a few months ago.  I wouldn't want to have to do it twice, so if it were me, I would just call your OB's office and ask if you should wait until your following appointment or not.
  • I had mine at 18 weeks and will have another at 26 weeks because of some medications.  I have been craving sweets so bad, I actually liked the drink...
  • I am having mine today. I will be 25wks tomorrow.

My midwife said between 26 and 28 weeks but they also recheck blood for anemia and stuff too closer to the third trimester so I think they do 26-28 weeks so that people don't have to go back in a couple weeks

  • In all of my other pregnancies I did it right around 28 weeks.  This pregnancy, because the baby is measuring quite a ways ahead, my doctor had me take it at 23 weeks.

I failed the one hour but just did the three hour this morning (horrible, just horrible) and passed.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • I will be 27w when I take mine.  I only need to avoid carbs for an hour before the test...which is awesome because I don't have my appointment until 3pm and I work alllll day before that with preschoolers...I would lose my mind if I couldn't eat.

  • Just took mines today (22w6d) and I got the orange flavored drink. It was nicely chilled so not so bad to drink, but my stomach was upset for a little while afterwards.
  • I did it once at 12 weeks because of a history w pre-diabetes before getting pregnant. Dr is having me retest at exactly 24 weeks.
  • I had one yesterday 21wks an have to have another at 26wks I almost vomited drinking the drink
  • I had an early one around. 20 weeks due to being overweight , and will have another one at 26-28 weeks. Maybe it's the same for you? They didn't actually tell me that's why they we're sending me early, I had to ask.

  • I had my 24wk check up on Friday and doc said it's not necessary to check my glucose unless I want her to... She said they can normally pick up too sugar when they do the urine test and she said my urine looks clear and also baby isn't too big.. So guess I don't need one then!
  • @Bon2737‌ do you go to a midwife practice? I'm so jealous your doctor is educated enough to know the glucose test is not always necessary!
  • Doctors can do it at varying times depending on the individual woman, if they feel it's better to test that particular person earlier then they will. So it all depends on your situation and everyone is different.
