upper lip tie?

I suspect my LO has an upper lip tie, and probably contributed to our BF failure. We have a ped appointment next week and will ask her to look. Anyone else dealt with this? Did you have it cut? If so, by what type of doctor?

Re: upper lip tie?

  • DS1 did. We didn't notice it until my supply kept tanking and eventually just disappeared (this wasn't until about 10 months though).

Because he was an older infant he was put under general anesthesia and it was clipped by an oral surgeon. His tie extended past his gums to the roof of his mouth, making it a pretty significant tie.

Many kids are born with them and usually break them themselves by falling during their toddler years. Ironically enough, a day or two after his surgery he fell and re-tore it.

  • Thanks @MommaKb710‌ @LivInCA‌ And @hutterflutter‌

I think his extends to the roof of his mouth, based on my mom diagnosis ;) I definitely want it checked out so we can avoid teeth problems or speech problems. I haven't necessarily read it causes speech problems, but it seems like it could. He'll already have enough teeth issues thanks to my genes, so no need to add anything else if it's preventable.
  • Our LO just had this by a certified pediatric dental surgeon. It was a simple procedure - we were apart maybe 1 minute and things are so much better including BFing!

Just a heads up, our ped didn't think that ours had one, the LC did. After evaluating pictures online against LO it was clear there was one. I only say that because I PERSONALLY wish I hadn't brushed off the LC based on the ped and had it evaluated earlier.

  • DD who is 3 still has one - we successfully breastfed until 15 months and didn't discover it until much later. Her doctor wanted to put her under to snip it but I talked to the dentist who said that he would freeze it and snip it when she is a bit older.
  • Thanks @LivInCA!  I'll be interested to see our ped's opinion of it.  Since we don't breastfeed my only concerns are for his future development, so that may impact her opinion too.

How would I know what to look for?

I only suspected something when he smiled in such a way that I saw the big line of tissue stretched over his gums. I googled "upper lip tie" having no idea if it was a real thing. He matched the pics and description.
