Nursery Colors/Theme ideas

I know it's early but I can't help but start thinking about what color(s) I'm going to put on the wall and how I'm going to decorate! Of course, this will depend on whether we are having a girl or boy. If it's a girl, I am really liking the idea of incorporating navy blue some how. And if it's a boy I am really into the whole rustic/earth tones/woodsy vibe. I'll have to get on Pinterest to see if I can find anything that catches my eye. Anyone else already have any ideas as to what they want to do yet?

Re: Nursery Colors/Theme ideas

  • I love the earth tones/ rustic feel for a boy but I also love the idea of gray and yellow. My DDs room is gray and lavender and I love it but she also ended up with quite a bit of pink.

  • If it's a boy we're doing a plane theme with warm colors. If it's a girl, I have no idea. I had fun doing my daughter's but don't want it to be the same as what I did for hers so I'll have to see as it gets closer. I love Home Goods so I'll probably wonder in there as it all gets closer.
  • I like the navy blue idea! For both girls and boys, maybe a sailor theme with white and red accents? Also, navy blue makes me think of the sky, twinkling lights, the little prince...just brainstorming here! However I would be really careful with dark colors on all of the walls, it can be too much, especially for a nursary.

  • We're doing the gender neutral cutesy owl/woodland creatures theme.  I've already started a baby wishlist on amazon, I just kept it private since no one knows... Hey, no judging, I get bored at night ;)

  • Love mint and peach for a girl and for a boy we like the idea of a wood wall with gray walls and navy/yellow accents!
  • We're thinking a under the sea theme. I bought an origami mobile kit where I can make little fishies. I'm also looking at cross stitching a quilt top and sending it out to be quilted. Found one with fish, octopus, seahorse, starfish, etc. It's pretty cute.

I did the under the sea theme with my first!  Super cute, and a ton of stuff to choose from!

  • No theme here.  Have loved gray and yellow forever and wanted to do that but don't feel like it will go well with our beige carpeting that we just don't want to pay to replace.  New plan is navy/ivory/aqua/coral in what combination to be determined when we know if we are team blue/pink/purple.

  • No ideas yet. We'll start looking once we are further along.
For DD we went neutral, 3 colors on the wall. Light tan on top, a warm brown on the bottom and chocolate stripe to separate the light and "dark".
Lions, tigers, and bears. I LOVED her room.
  • DD's room was pale pink before we were even pregnant so it stayed that way once we found out girl. We put up some cinderella silhouette pictures and a huge wall decal of a princess castle and that was it. This go around I really want the baby to have a tasteful Harry Potter and/or book themed room. I'm also excited to give DD a new big girl room and take her shopping to pick stuff out for both :)
  • I've always really been into neutrals too. I liked the idea of a neutral nursery (browns and tans) with giraffes for a boy but we just moved into a new house and the room we planned to use and the future baby room was already painted gray. Luckily, I also love the idea of mustard yellow and gray for a girl's nursery. If our baby is a boy, I think I will just do gray and navy with a few mustard yellow accents to add a pop of color.
  • We did a gender neutral jungle theme with my daughter (we were team green). We are just switching her to her new bedroom next week which has a cherry blossom/birds theme with blue-grey colored walls. We are keeping the nursery the same as we are team green again this go around.
  • We are doing gender neutral but recently received a bunch of newborn onesies with duckies! So ducks is our theme now.
  • With our first we kept things pretty neutral, creams and whites with lambs. Once we found out we were having a girl we added some wall art with pink and green, some other girly decorations, and added a pink and green lamb bed spread. With this one..... Well we live in a 2 bedroom home so new sprout will share with us and eventually share with his/her older sister. So I guess it's a good thing we went neutral to start! ;)
  • Created a nursery Pinterest board a couple weeks ago. Having way too much fun with it. Think we are going with golds and neutrals with a hint of jewel tones. The oversized crowns will be happening for my little King or Princess. LOVE!
  • I did a fantasy forest theme in the nursery for my daughter; it is gender neutral so I don't planon changing it for baby 2. https://www.craftersindisguise.com/2013/07/fantasy-forest-theme-nursery.html?m=1

  • I made the slipcover for the chair and refinished the dresser with new paint and hardware.

Love duckies! My DS's first birthday party was a yellow ducky theme! With a tiered cake and rubber duckies as props! Turned out great! He also had a couple of neutral Carter's outfits with ducks and a stuffed duck that he loved so it just seemed right.

  • We will be using the same nursery as we did for my son. It's fairly gender neutral. Walls are a periwinkle and everything is in aqua, sage, periwinkle and a touch of brown. My husband painted a beautiful mural he worked very hard on also. I just love the whole thing.

  • We're doing a Peter Pan nursery which is what I've always wanted! I'm sure the ideal image I have in my mind is too expensive so I will have to scale it back but I'm super excited about it
  • I made the slipcover for the chair and refinished the dresser with new paint and hardware.

I love the chair and dresser! So cute.
  • For a boy we won't do another nursery. LO will move in with DS around 6mo or so when we transfer the baby out of our room.

For a girl we will do pink and gold.

  • I'm doing a Dr Seuss theme.

I was advised to get a recliner as well, something you'll be comfortable sleeping in.

We're also planning on grey and yellow....LOVE that combo and it's nice and neutral, since we are not planning on finding out the gender beforehand. Not to mention, because it was also the colour theme for our wedding, I have a bunch of super cute accessories that can be incorporated, like our adorable bird cake toppers!  :bz

@Yellow1998 I think navy would be a great choice for a little girl nursery, and coral could be a great accent color to go with the navy. Blue and orange are complimentary colors: so coral would be a great color option instead of the basic, light pink for a girl nursery using navy as the primary color! Woodsy/earthy/rustic for a little boy would be adorable!
  • For DD we did a Very Hungry Caterpillar theme and I love it. We haven't talked much about whether we will use it again or not... but if it is a boy, I love a Where the Wild Things Are theme. I guess we will talk more when we find out the sex of this baby. The walls are a nice yellow, so I would love to not have to paint.

  • If it's a girl it's purple, blue and green.
    If it's a boy it'll be blue and green. :) I can't wait
  • We are going gender neutral with a Studio Ghibli theme.  We have been collecting items for a nursery over the past few years, knowing that is what we would want to do when the time came.  We were able to get a bunch of items when we visited Japan last March.  I can't wait to start putting it all together.
  • With DD we just decorated with black, white, and pink. We didn't paint the walls. We figured it would just be easier to modify as she got older. She started with zebra and no pink sheets once we switched from her crib. Now her room is decked in Frozen everything.
