18 week a/s

I am scheduled to have my atomy scan on the 29th. I will be 18 weeks and 3 days. I trust that my midwife would only schedule me for then if it they were going to be able to get all the important measurements. My question is if they can see the sex will it be as accurate as if the scan were done at 20 weeks? I know finding out the sex is just a perk of the a/s but as a FTM I really want to know.

Re: 18 week a/s

  • From what I know, it is. The caveat is that there can be errors--even at a 20 week scan, especially if the baby isn't cooperative. You can probably ask the tech or your doctor how sure they are and how often it turns out to be wrong.

There was a thread a while back asking if anyone had been given an incorrect reading at the A/S, and some had heard of it or had themselves, but to me it seemed a relatively low number.

    Good luck!

I had my anatomy scan this week at 18w4d. We are Team Green but the doc was picking on us and saying he knew the sex, even if we don't. So he seemed pretty confident in it. MORE IMPORTANTLY he said he didn't see anything in the anatomy that gives him concern, however he is having us come back at 22 week when the wee beastie is bigger so he can double check everything once it's bigger and easier to see.

Edited for a bad word choice.

  • I had one at 18 weeks and they said they couldn't tell us the sex. Probably for a variety of reasons. But they also couldn't see all angles of the heart and face well so we go back again next week. I'll be over 20 weeks. It's not always 100% guaranteed anyway. Unless you get a blood test.

  • My OB looked at my 16 week appointment with the handheld, but baby wasn't positioned so she could see and it wasn't all that important really. From everything I've read though, should be pretty clear by 18 weeks.

Ditto this.  I would be more concerned with being able to view the heart and all the other things they try to see at the scan.  Seeing the sex is really just a bonus.  But I'm not sure they would have scheduled it if they didn't think it was ok.

  • I believe they are usually done between 18-22 weeks. Just keep in mind there is always a chance for error or baby may be shy. Only way to be sure is genetic testing or when baby is born.
  • My OB told me that the earliest they can tell (if the baby cooperates) is around 16 weeks.

  • I just had mine yesterday, and I was 18w 3d. The ultra sound tech was from the local hospital and worked in the NICU and was just filling in for the usual tech, so she was very thorough. She went over everything with us and it was great to see the amazing features of the baby from the heart to the spine. She said that she was certain we were having a girl, but there is always a small margin of error for anyone relying on an ultra sound to find out the sex of the baby. So that's just something to keep in mind!
  • I will be 18w2d at my appt on Tuesday but had not had mentioned to me that I would be having the a/s scan then. I hope that is something they would mention as I would want DH to take a few hours off for that. Hmmm.

  • I am team green but the tech knew when we had an u/s at 16 weeks. LO was being very cooperative.
  • That is something you should have asked your midwife BEFORE making the appointment.
