My Dr says my placenta is maturing and deteriorating too fast?

She says my placenta looks like a placenta would look like if I was already past my due date. I'm only 34 weeks. Does anyone have any knowledge about this my Dr never really went into details about it.

  • Unfortunately, I don't know anything about this. As a next step, I'd suggest contacting your dr's office and asking for more details. Concurrently, I'd search for reputable sources of info (ex. mayo clinic). If you're not satisfied with what your dr tells you, it's never a bad idea to get a 2nd opinion.

  • I would call and ask them to explain. What testing did they do to come to that conclusion? Do you have any risk factors (GD/AMA).  You need to get more information - including what the Dr wants to do about it.

  • Have you discussed the options with your doctors?  I hate to bring this up but they were watching me for this too.  My mother lost 3 children due to this.  A placenta abruption could happen which is very risky.  My mom was induced at 35 weeks with my sis and her placenta was aged to almost 42 weeks.  What did your doc say when they told you this news?

YOUR DOCTOR would have a lot of knowledge about this...Yet you are asking a bunch of internet strangers...instead of asking your Dr for more details and clarification...seems like a smart idea..

  • Yes my doctor doesn't seemed to be too worried about it as long as my baby is still getting the nutrients he needs from the placenta so I have to be monitered each week. No matter what I ask her about it I never get a straight answer. She told me she had no idea what was causing it and that there was nothing I could do.
  • I'm not a doctor but an aged placent is a serious problem, you should really get more answers.

  • I had this with my second son. The placenta was clacified. Basically it wore out before it was supposed to and was not providing nutrients needed for baby to grow anymore inside. In the final weeks up to birth he was not gaining weight. He is a strong, healthy little boy now. I would ask your dr about how long they think the placenta will give nutrients and support to baby before giving out completely. Hope this helps.
  • Doctor doesn't know the reasoning behind her diagnosis = Ask random strangers on the internet. Sure, makes sense.

The Bump Gods won't be able to save you, OP. If your placenta is failing, he's not going to continue getting what he needs. "I don't know" is NOT an acceptable answer from a medical professional when they make a diagnosis. There has to be an answer tied to their reasoning. Simple as that.

Tread lightly here and learn how to question a doctor when it comes to your son's safety. It's your responsibility as a mother.

  • I'm sorry I don't have any experience with this but I am praying everything is okay for you! How was this discovered? Are you having routine ultrasounds or blood tests? I fear that this might not even be picked up if it were to happen to me.. All the dr ever does is measure me with a tape measurer and use a doppler to check for heartbeat. I have no idea what condition my placenta is in!

My sis had this issue.it was caused by her blood pressure constantly being high. She had emergency c section at like 35 weeks. Doctor said she couldn't believe my neice survived off that and only had short stay in nicu.
  • Thank you for the smart reply but when I asked my doctor she said she had no idea why my placenta looked the way it did. The reason I asked this question online was to hear from people that may have experienced the same thing. In the future maybe you shouldn't reply if you have a problem with the question. Thank you though :)

People could be really rude. Cant stand people who act like that.
  • Lurking from June 15 I'm disappointed to see that being asked to answer medical questions just never stops! :((

Then you should probably leave, since you thought we were rude, EVEN though no one was.

  • My doctor thought this was happening to me with my first pregnancy because the baby was measuring small. I started having to do kick counts and go in for NSTs. I was actually induced at 38 weeks 5 days because of it. As it turns out, the baby was bigger than they expected and my placenta wasn't remarkably bad. You might ask your doctor about being monitored a little more closely from here on out.
