chicken for toddlers

Anyone have a way of cooking chicken that makes it appealing to their toddler?

D really doesn't like meat, so I've been giving him beans and eggs for protein, but I really would like to try to get him into chicken as well...

Re: chicken for toddlers

  • I cook chicken a couple of ways for DS. #1 sprinkle with garlic salt and pan fry or #2 use lawrys herb garlic marinade and grill stovetop. It's nothing special but simple and DS likes it but I think mainly because it's salty and he loves salt.

  • Have you tried shredded chicken in like chili or soup? I think that's easier for kids to eat.

  • G loves meat, which I know is super unusual for toddlers, but he especially loves when I do chicken in the slow cooker. One of my favorites is chicken breasts (or thighs if you want it really tender), a bottle of salsa verde, some seasonings and (optional) cubed cream cheese. I put it in tortillas as tacos or as a burrito. It's tender and yummy. He also likes chicken in Thai and Chinese dishes; chicken fried rice, curry chicken, orange chicken. What about chicken quesadillas, chicken in pasta, BBQ chicken, chicken pot pie, chicken wings?

  • I'm with @Ducky719‌. Only Earth's Best Chicken Nuggets around here. I can generally get them to try homemade chicken nuggets (toss pieces of chicken with a little flour, breadcrumbs, salt, garlic/onion powder and sauté in olive oil). They like the flavor as long as I give them ketchup. But, they'll usually spit it out after they chew it up. Points for effort, right?

A is ALL about ketchup! If she had it, she'd dunk everything in ketchup!

I also will give her a dish of apple butter for dunking pancakes, waffles, or French toast.

She likes to dunk pizza and raw veggies in ranch dressing.

  • J is a ketchup freak. She will try most things if it is covered in ketchup.

I get some organic chicken sausages with no preservatives or additives (they are clean if you are into that) at trader Joes. Not all their sausage is clean, so read the ingredients. I make chicken tortilla stew in the crock pot.

J is obsessed with steak. The nicer, yummier cut, the better. Translation, the girl loves filet. She will eat steak without ketchup.

A will sometimes do that, but if we tell her 'ok, take a bite' she will.......

I could give her a bowl of ketchup and a spoon and she'd be happy......yuck

  • Our DS doesn't appear to see the point of eating plain meat. If it's mixed up with rice or a chicken taco he'll happily munch away but just chicken from the grill he was not in to at all. However, DH is like the condiment king of the universe and DS decided that "dipping" was the coolest thing in the world. BBQ sauce, mild salsa, ketchup, mustard - DH always has some kind of condiment, so DS picked up on that and rolled with it.

(Disclaimer - he'd still rather eat processed nuggets or a hot dog!) ;)

  • My guy will gobble up any meat as long as it isn't over done. We now have a digital thermometer that we use for everything and that helps get more into him. He also prefers how moist dark meat is so we have bought some thighs and legs lately and he gobbles those up. He also enjoys chicken salad.

You crack me up! We definitely got lucky with a good eater. We both eat everything and I swear the BLW made a big difference - he's been eating what we eat from so early on. Although it amuses people to see how much he will eat and how you can't eat anything in front of him or he will want some. "I want some!" is his famous line ;)

Uhhhhhh, I'm pretty sure our children are distant cousins. DS2 is totally that kid that licks the salsa off the chip until it is soggy. So, we are basically winning at teaching table manners.

  • So many funny things in this thread, I did laugh at licking the pizza! I think we got lucky with M too as far as eating, she does eat most things. But I second (or third or fourth) the dip vote. M loves ketchup (I think it is gross and yes she also does the repeated dip and lick) she she loves guacamole.
She started eating chicken in chicken soup and it was shredded. She will also eat homemade nuggets.
