  • Thinking of you all during this special time!
  • Quick update. I'm going to be honest about this experience because I promised myself I always would be. Apologies in advance if this contains tmi.

So labour didn't start naturally on Tuesday and by Wednesday morning we were being induced. Of all things, it had to be the pessary. Uncomfortable for most, to those of us with penetration anxiety and a tilted uterus to navigate... in the end we got it halfway before I couldn't take it any more.

We then went up to the birth centre to await developments. From 9:30 to 5, we watched others coming in after being induced and then being carted off to labour ward.
My contractions started in earnest in my back, progressing very quickly to almost a minute duration and alternating between a minute and five apart. Unfortunately for the other couples on the ward (and I felt really guilty about it but couldn't stop myself) I quickly latched on to vocalising as my main coping strategy. The cramps, I could have handled but the backache was so strong, I could barely move. Thank goodness mum popped in and was able to help A wash me down after a small accident.

As the night wore on, I accepted first a tens machine (a real godsend, do try it) and then paracetamol and codeine. It had eased off a little by bed time but I was still vocalising and to help me relax about it, we were moved to a two bed ward without any roomates.

This morning, labour has not progressed further. After monitoring and breakfast, we will be heading up to labour ward for the drip.

So frustrated but otherwise happy to see baby is still healthy and not under stress. Don't know what I would have done without A last night though. It's times like these that make me so grateful and proud to have her in my life.
  • I am so sorry that this process has been so challenging for you so far. I am assuming when you say "the drip" you mean pitocin? I hope that things move quickly and smoothly from here, and that you have your baby in your arms before long! Sending lots of positive thoughts your way!

Thinking of you today.  You have been so strong already!  Don't be one bit shy about vocalizing if that's what works for you.  You can do this!

  • I hope from here on out labor progresses quickly and easily. Sending you good thoughts!
  • Hang in there. You can do it!
  • Here's hoping that today is going well for you!
  • Signal is a bit intermittent on the ward, so I'll try to keep this brief.

After ten hours of back labour with the drip. we found out that I was only 3cms gone. I was about to lose it at this point -already feeling I had nothing left to give. We tried diamorphine and then an epidural before one of the doctors realised that the reason we were struggling so much was because baby was presenting with her head turned to the side.

We were taken down to theatre, where they tried first forceps and then suction to turn her. As a final resort when these failed, baby Santana arrived by c-section at exactly 4am.

Back on the labour ward, we seemed to be doing ok. Baby was struggling to feed but the midwife didn't seem concerned and said she'd get it in time. And we were discovering that my fast healing extends to surgery too.
About 7:30 one of the docs from peeds came in to talk to us about needing to give baby anti-biotics for a potential infection I had been showing signs of during delivery. A went with her, when they took her away.

Santana's been out of my sight for almost two hours now and I'm really finding it difficult, not having this bonding time with her.
  • Welcome to the world baby Santana! I hope she is back snuggled in your arms very soon! I am so sorry your delivery was so difficult and traumatic, but I am glad you are on the mend now. Can't wait to see pics of your little one!

First, I'm soooo happy Santana is here. Congrats to you and A! It sounds like a difficult labor and you gave it your all and then made a great decision to have the c-section. You sound very strong. I hope Santana is back with you quickly and you have nothing but snuggles and bonding from here on out.

  • Congrats! My goodness, what a long few days you have had.  Hopefully you both will be reunited soon.
  • Welcome Santana! I hope you get her back in your arms soon! They took M away for less than an hour and it was the longest hour of my life.
