DD not crawling, pulling up or bearing much weight on legs - vent"ish"

DD had her 9 month check up earlier this week and now I am obsessing over the fact that she is a bit behind in some motor skills. She has met all other milestones including mastering the pincer grasp and transferring object easily. She was 4 weeks early, but even at an adjusted age of 8 months doctor said she is around 6 weeks behind in development of her legs, but they are not too concerned yet.

She will very minimally bear weight on her legs. Sometimes we can get her to hold on to a blanket and stand leaning completely on the couch and hold her at the waist to try to get her to work on legs but many times she will just bend her legs and not even try. Doctor wants us to spend more time holding her up and encouraging her to stand assisted and will evaluate at her 12 month appointment if she has not made significant improvements and then start some PT if they think its needed. She also does not crawl or try to pull up at all yet. She can sit unassisted if put in a sitting position but does not get into position n her own and she pivots on her arms to turn direction and roll to wherever it is she wants to go. I know all babies develop at their own pace but I can't help but worry!

She also has slight tortacolis and was evaluated last month by an early intervention program to see if she met their standards to qualify for extra support/PT but she was not "far enough" behind and in more than one area.

To add to my distress a good friend of mine that was due at the same time but went full term posted a picture of her 8.5 month old legitimately WALKING with no support! Wow, I know super early, not even 9 months yet, and here my baby girl isn't even crawling. If you made it through this whole thing thanks for reading. I tend to worry a lot and just don't know how concerned I should be at this point.

  • DD can only sit up for a couple of minutes unassisted, and only if we put her in that position.  She army crawls, but I've only seen her rocking on all fours once.  She'll get there.

  • My LO is not crawling, can't bring himself to a sitting position, and is not pulling to stand. He does sit if I put him in that position, and he's leaning and reaching further. It's hard not to worry, but your LO will get there! My cousin's son didn't walk until 15 months and within days he had mastered running and walking up steps.
  • My son is the same way and my daughter was too. Not something to worry about, IMO.

  • My daughter didn't crawl until 12 months and didn't walk until 15.5 months. She's perfectly fine now at 3. Keep working with your LO, but try not to worry. And just think, those ppl with mobile babies are totally stressed because they get in to everything! I wish my second would slow down!
  • Just remember that there isn't really anyone out there that hasn't learned to walk unless there is some sort of true disability (correct me if Im wrong!). There are plenty of places in the world where babies don't go to physical therapy and am sure learned to walk. A friend of mine had a baby that didn't walk until 17 months but when the baby did walk did a great job and didn't fall. Your baby is probably just working on mastering things in her mind before going for it!

I'm sorry you are feeling anxious! Babies are all so different, and develop at such different rates. Mine is good on physical stuff but hasn't done any babbling at all yet, much less words, so I'm also feeling anxious about him being behind. For peace of mind, you could always find a physical therapist under your insurance and take your little one in for an evaluation. My son's torticollis wasn't super severe, but physical therapy was so, so helpful for him, and gave me a lot of peace of mind. Ours was just a $15 copay each time, and well worth it. We ended up working a lot on non-torticollis issues, too.

Also, I'm obviously not an expert, but passing on what we've learned in PT, especially with tort babies, crawling (more than standing) is a really important milestone that you can't rush, but want to prolong as much as possible - it helps to stretch that tight side and decreases likelihood of spine issues later on. But, it's totally normal for tort babies to be behind developmentally (and plenty of babies without tort aren't even crawling yet!). Just keep doing lots of tummy time and stretches. Your LO will get there!

  • Lo is doing all of the above but ds1 didn't do this until 12 months + he seemed like he was a baby for longer where lo hasn't been a 'baby' for what seems 5 minutes
  • I know its hard not to worry, but if the pedi isn't too concerned then you shouldn't be either. Kids develop at their own pace, and sometimes they do just make those leaps overnight. DS1 was an early developer on all the physical stuff, but he didn't talk until almost 2.5. Our pedi wasn't worried about it and so I tried to follow suit. Sure enough he's almost 3 and now is a huge chatterbox. He just hadn't gotten there yet.

  • It's really great that your pediatrician is keeping an eye on things, you would hate to have to decide on your own whether to fight for PT or some other kind of early intervention.

DS5 never rolled over at all, he was a big fat baby and never showed much interest in rolling or crawling. He could sit up but he was content to just grab things within his reach. I think he started crawling at maybe 11 months? And as soon as he mastered that he completely took off, and walked at 13 months. Now he just won't keep still, he's always moving!

I read somewhere that babies often focus their development on either gross motor or verbal skills, and if one thing is early, the other often lags behind a bit. So maybe that's a factor.
  • One of my babies doesn't do any of things yet either. She is 10 mo (9 adjusted). I have a little apprehension about it but mostly I just think shd will be on the slow end of the range of normal. She has met other milestones like making consonant sound, feeding herself, etc.

  • Thanks for all of the replies and reassurances! In my mind I know that I should n't really worry but I can't help it! I am a worrier by nature. I just need to keep reminding myself that babies develop at their own pace. DS crawled around 8 months but didn't walk (unassisted) until close to 15 months! I will keep working with her at home and try to lay off the worrying...
  • My lo sounds spot on with yours. She is doing none of those things either and I brought up all of these things at her 9 month appt this morning. Dr was not concerned so I'm trying not to be either but it's so hard. I have 2 friends with babies the same age (one 2 months younger) and they're both so far ahead of my LO. Also my son walked at 10 months. It's hard not to compare but try not to. My
Daughter also had torticollis and was in pt for it but has long been exited from services

  • @MaiTaiBeth‌ That's very interesting...and true for us. LO has been getting on all fours and rocking in my bed and her crib for a couple of weeks but just started kind of doing it on the floor. Thanks for sharing that.

  • It's so hard and we always worry. PT has us working with some things with PF on the bed, she said its softer and babies are more confident. She does do more on the bed and it seems to help her get more confident on the floor.

This is so interesting. Hazel is the same way. She starting scooting backwards on the bed as well as rolling over
