  • Head it on NPR this morning :-(  At least employees will be getting 16+ weeks of severance pay. In the USA they just send you out on your butt.

Apparently distribution problems led to a really terrible Christmas retail season.

  • I'm not sure about the rest of Canada, but here in Edmonton Target was a kind of a disappointment.  The shelves were almost always empty, and popular items were next in stock and the stores were almost always eerily quite.  I was excited for target to venture up north at first, hoping they would bring some of the brands and merchandise they sold at Target down in the states - sad that that didn't happen.  I'm glad to see that their making a plan to support their employees though!
  • I'm sad. It wasn't as cheap as across the border but I liked their stuff and their clearance sales are always great. Yet another store closing, really feel for the thousands of workers trying to get another job this time of year. At least there's some severance pay, but still it blows :(
  • I too was super excited when target first came to Canada but I found the prices and selection to be really poor. Like they were kinda trying to be a fancier version of Walmart. For Christmas my kids got a gift card for target so I let my 6 year old pick out a present and told him he had $25 to use. So he found a Lego set that seemed to be clearly labeled as 24.99. We got to the till and it was $60! So we went to customer service and they didn't seem to care about it being the wrong price on the shelf. They said pay $60 or take it back. I'm used to Walmart where they will actually match the price for you so I was disappointed by there response. I wasn't planning on shopping there again after that anyways.
Unfortunelty I don't think they did the research on the Canadian market very well. It's too bad for all the employees but I won't be missing them
  • Yessss oh my god I am so sad :(  We don't have one locally (and I'm a pretty big WalMarter) but I love going to Target when we are in the city. I find so much of their stuff is cuter and better quality.

DH and I were planning on taking DD there to get all of her bedding for her big girl bed, and still will, but this sucks.

I had read a few things which I thought were oddly conflicting, like they had spent a ton more money than they had planned expanding stores that weren't big enough, but then didn't have the stock to fill the shelves? Just seems like poor planning.

@Jtdd there is a scanning code of practice which says that if an item comes up at a different price than what it was displayed / marked as you get it for the lesser price AND you get a $10 discount (or it's free if it is less than $10)

On a claim being presented by the customer, where the scanned price of a product at checkout is higher than the price displayed in the store or than advertised by the store, the lower price will be honoured; and

        (a) if the correct price of the product is $10 or less, the retailer will give the product to the customer free of charge; or
        (b) if the correct price of the product is higher than $10, the retailer will give the customer a discount of $10 off the corrected price.

It looks like stores might need to opt in to this (which wasn't my understanding) but I know for sure Wal-Mart is a participant and actually has it posted on their tills.

I found this out after my BFF told me she got free toilet paper at the grocery store because it scanned at the wrong price lol

  • I'm happy it's leaving!
  • Saskatoon's were meh. I went to one often because I don't live in the city and it was the most convienient location to pick up things like diapers and such, but it was really just a small version of Walmart. Which was nice because it wasn't ever busy and I got a red card to get my 5% off, but if it gets replaced by something equal I wouldn't even notice.
  • I am so sad about this.  It was a great place for mat clothes.  Unfortunately upper management majorly screwed up their entry into Canada.  Even at Christmas time the shelves here were fairly bare.  They had major supply chain problems.  But they also had some of the best Black Friday specials here in Canada.  They were a nicer Walmart.  It will leave a hole in Canadian retail... something above Walmart but below the larger department stores (which are now far and few between).

  • I'm going tomorrow to see if there are deals. I've heard from a few people that there are already good deals as they start to liquidate stock. From what I've heard all stores will stay open right up until they all close. I'll miss them as they replaced our Zellers store which I also liked for variety. I wonder if anything else will fill the void. Where I live we also had Giant Tiger stores which were mini target stores only cheaper goods and those are gone too (mostly)! :( I miss the variety!

  • So unfortunate!
  • My husband's first response 'let's look for baby deals'.

There was a significant marketing issue with the Canadian cohorts and with inventory mismanagement - many Canadian's felt jilted with the company.

I feel sorry for the 10's of thousands of employees who will be laid off as a results.

  • I have mixed feelings about this. They were definitely overpriced but I agree the mat selection was nice to browse here and there.

Meh... If only it was like the US stores. I only ever Made it to the Australian target but even that was so superior to Canadian targets - bigger and cheaper!

That said I'll be watching for baby/maternity deals! ;) Anyone know when they are closing? I just skimmed the article.....
  • I am in Calgary and I am not surprised at all.
They have had major distribution problems since the beginning and their merchandise never seemed to fit their target audience.
It's a shame as I liked it for it's quiet atmosphere and it's pretty awful for the employees. Especially the ones in Alberta when right now it seems our economy is dropping at an alarming rate.
  • I read earlier it will be about 4-5 months before they officially close, so fingers crossed for a big closing sale. I don't mind their merchandise but usually don't buy things there unless they are on sale
  • I went to Target yesterday (the day it was announced on the news) and I asked the cashier how long they had until it closed, and she said to me " we don't know much" we found out today about our jobs by the news on TV too" How awful.
  • I liked it; no lines, better quality stuff than Walmart, got tons of clothes for ds on clearance which was a great deal. Will be scoping out liquidation prices but sad to see it go. And our town is not doing so well on the job front at the moment any way so this is going to hurt
