TTC after 35

Benched for the chicken pox vaccine (long)

Hi Ladies,

I went to a new RE yesterday and I was really pleased with my experience. The doctor was really great and he was so much more thorough than the 1st RE I visited. He went through all of my options and success rates for those options as well as pricing.  He also explained in detail how the various meds work and why one might be better for my situation over another. He also did a vag. ultrasound to get a cursory view of things.

Anyhow, one thing he told me that the other RE did not was that I had tested negative for the Varicella (chicken pox) antibodies.  He strongly recommended getting the vaccine before trying to conceive, which would bench me for 2 months.  After sleeping on it, I decided I would get the chicken pox vaccine and wait the 2 months.  While I realize the chances of me getting chicken pox while pregnant are low, and the chances of the child being affected are also low, what's 2 more months in the grand scheme of things?  My heart wants to just go right ahead and jump into IUI but my rational side says, waiting 2 more months isn't going to hurt anything.

So, I will be benched for a couple of months but plan to still hang out here.  I am looking forward to not temping, OPKing and going crazy during the 2WW for a few months.

Re: Benched for the chicken pox vaccine (long)

  • I'm so glad you found an RE who seems willing to be thorough and explain things clearly (including cost!)

I think you made a good call with the vaccine, too. I'm sure it's a little frustrating to wait, but a break from all the TTC crazy might be refreshing, too!

  • So glad you had such a good experience! I hope my appointment next week goes as well.

Good call with the vaccine - I've never considered that, and I'm not sure they tested me for it. I actually never had chicken pox, even though I was exposed when I was a kid.

Taking a break from TTC for a couple months will be nice too - you'll be able to start fresh, all relaxed. Sometimes I miss the days when I didn't revolve my life around my fertile window!

  • I'm one of those lucky people who have had chicken pox twice... and my mom and my sister have had shingles (caused by the chicken pox virus) so excellent call on the vaccine. It woudl SUCK to have chicken pox as an adult and while pregnant.  So glad your RE pointed it out for you and glad he is working out.  FX after 2 months you'll get your BFP!

Off Mirena Nov 2013, On Nuvaring end of Jan, Back off Sept 2014.  Never ending cycle starting end of Sept...
    11/14 Provera failed... cycle continues
12/14 High FSH (57 "midcycle")  OBGYN had no clue... about anything
01/15 More lab results coming back from RE. U/S showed small (1")cyst on left ovary, thin lining, and couldn't locate right ovary so  possibly straight to DE and IVF

Occassionally mess with the chart below to see "what if" and learn (not to make it pretty but because FF stays drunk with me).

  • I don't know how I escaped the chicken pox. My sisters and my mom all got it at the same time when we were kids and yet I didn't get it.  I must have super powers.

  • Ok, I may have sounded the alarm prematurely. My husband told me this morning he doesn't want to wait. I will have to think on it a bit longer.

  • I actually had chicken pox pretty bad when I was 13 and still test negative for the antibodies. I have tested negative for the past 10 years and still never get the vaccine. Don't know why I don't but I always say I will do it at some point.
    I procrastinate!!!!!

    All welcome

  • Yay! Happy you had a good experience and like the doc. I wish I could help you with this decision (I am a NNP in a NICU) but I honestly can't remember taking care of any babies where mom had chicken pox while pregnant (which in itself is probably good, right?). Have you HAD chicken pox and still tested negative like @hooligans4‌?

  • This is crazy, but I just got a similar call.  I know that I never had chicken pox and wasn't immune, and got the vaccine when I was preparing to TTC #2.  Problem is, they didn't tell me that there were 2 parts, and I only had the first.

GL to you in making the decision about whether to wait!

I am not sure how to say this without getting a "solicitation" warning so I guess I just say that I am not longer active on THIS site.

  • Thanks everyone. I was just surprised when my DH told me he didn't want to wait. He seems so impartial most of the time, I didn't think he really cared.  Anyhow, I start letrozole today and fingers crossed I will be doing my first IUI next week.
