Birthing classes

What birthing class/classes are you going with and why??

My husband and I are trying to decide between Birthing from Within, The Bradley Method, and Hypnobabies.

Our birth plan is natural birth in water and I am a yoga instructor and my husband is a chiropractor.

I'd love to hear what others have chosen and why! :)

Re: Birthing classes

  • We chose Bradley classes last time, mostly because it was "very strongly recommended" by the birth center we were planning on using.

I don't know much about Birthing from Within, but Bradley and Hypnobabies are on quite different ends of the spectrum, right? So IMO it would depend if you feel like you will want very hand-on support from your husband or if you feel like you are the type who might rather be left alone as much as possible.

The main benefit of Bradley classes was that they were very informative re pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, etc, not JUST labor. I didn't really need that, but I credit the classes with 90% of getting my husband to understand and really get behind my med-free birth plans. I ended up with a scheduled c/s because my DS was breech, but I still don't consider the classes a waste of time or money.

  • We are going to take a Birth and Babies class that covers the whole spectrum - giving birth and also newborn care... I think it is 12 weeks long, which sounds huge to me right now!
  • Our birth plan is natural birth in water and I am a yoga instructor and my husband is a chiropractor.
I'm trying to figure out what these things have to do with each other.

Lol yeah this is like two completely separate trains of thought
  • H and I are starting the Bradley Method classes next week. It's much more of an investment than I anticipated, but hopefully it's worth it! I'm also taking a few classes (Happiest Baby on the Block, CPR, etc) at a local hospital since the hospital I'll be delivering in is about 40 minutes away.

  • We're taking the Bradley classes. I don't love the 12 week commitment but we're both clueless when it comes to birthing and babies so we definitely need all the help we can get. I also think that it's warmed my husband up to the idea of a natural unmedicated birth, before he was a little skeptical because of everything he'd heard from our friends and their wives but now he's all for it and my biggest cheerleader. My midwife recommended Birthing from Within as well. I'm sure you can't go wrong with any of the classes!
  • I didn't bother first time and I won't do this time either. My nurses were the best teachers/coaches I could have asked for, and baby has to come out some way right?

  • With DD we took the Birth & Babies class that the hospital was offering.  I highly recommend taking a class with an open mind.  The things DH and I were laughing/joking about in the class ended up being what I needed to get through the transition stage.

  • Our MW suggested Birth Bootcamp since we're having an at home water birth. I think it's 10 weeks with the last class focusing on newborn care and breastfeeding. The last class is 2 days before my due date so we'll see if we get to take it. :)
  • For my first child my husband and I took Bradley classes. We aren't taking classes this time because we are having twins and realize that this labor could really go in so many different directions from the birth of one baby to the next. Also we still feel really prepared from our initial round of Bradley classes. My husband was so prepared and calm in the delivery room because the classes which I really needed. And I loved that the classes were 12 weeks long. It gave me something to look forward to from week to week.
  • With my first I did Gentle Birth and Bliss Born (both hypnobirthing home study courses).  This time I got a free Hypno Babies home study so I will do that along with Gentle Birth.  I also watched the Pink Kit videos which were very educational for what happens during labor, but not something I was able to use during labor.  Hypno birthing worked great for me and I'm happy I did those classes.  I was only able to utilize hypnosis during the first part of labor but it helped.

Unfortunately I've never lived in an area that offers in-person classes.

I just got the Hypnobabies home study course from a friend of mine, so I'm doing that.

I'll probably drag DH to a newborn care class, since I don't think he's ever changed a diaper in his life, though.

  • I just finished up a birth class with my doula.  It was a general natural birth in a hospital kind of class.  The bradley method seems like the best unless you are the type that leans heavily towards one style or another.  I read birthing from within and got a lot out of it, but if you like more information and less painting, you might like Bradley.  That being said, its 12 weeks and march is 7 weeks away, so I don't know if that would be available.
The advice I got at the hospital orientation and from my doula and midwife was that something will work or feel great only for a short period of time and then you'll get stuck and need to try something different.  For this reason I liked that my class covered a lot of different techniques and I've been reading about others on my own.

  • Our options were at the birthing "house" or at the hospital. We choose the hospital.

    Is this spam?

  • We are about halfway through the Bradley Method classes, and both really enjoying them. You learn so much overall, and the long series helps you feel really prepared and confident. I also like that having so much time with the instructor has allowed us to build a relationship with her where we can really be open and ask about anything.
