I'm a FTM so I don't know what a contraction feels like. Google tells me BH feels like a tightening in the abdomen, however, they are inconsistent and not timeable. They are pretty common as your pregnancy progresses.

Drink more water & lay on your left side. If they become timeable or your water breaks or you begin to bleed, call your doctor or MW.

Google & a pregnancy book told me that.
  • I'm a first time mom so they are still very infrequent for me but I did read that they start sooner for people who are on their second or third pregnancy

My midwife have me something on preterm labor this week that talks about this . It's fairly common after first pregnancy but it says empty your bladder . Drink 3 glasses of cold water and lay on your left side . If you have 5 within the next hour to contact your dr . Hope that's helpful .
And ladies .. If a post isn't something you feel you can help with or don't have something constructive to say just scroll past it . No need for the same responses on every post this morning .

    Are you a mod? No?

    Okay then....

I see OP got a lot of good advice. Hopefully someone was able to help her. Of course we are not doctors. Any serious concern including BH that don't ease, would make me call.

Yes, from 24wks on with each of my babies I have experienced braxton hicks contractions.
    Married: 3/01/08
    Baby Girl: 7/29/11
    Angel Baby: M/C 7/15/14 at 7wk
    BFP: 8/23/14 - Due 4/28/15  - It's a BOY!
  • If you haven't had a Braxton hicks you'll know when you do! I'm a ftm and I knew right away what it was from reading about them in this app. I get them probably daily now. They are random and don't hurt but definitely feel really weird. I actually get them most often when I am driving.
  • I've had them from early on with the pregnancy... (Maybe 12 weeks) and they are getting stronger and more frequent but still random. They don't hurt, they just feel weird. I had NO idea I was having them with my 1st until I was at my midwife's office hooked up to the heart monitor and the nurse said "your having a contraction now!!" I was stunned. The whole time I thought it was my daughter stretching out and pressing her butt or head up against my uterus. HA! I know, silly :)
But they are harmless...in fact they are great practice for your uterus, and are normal earlier in 2nd and 3rd pregnancies. Make sure you are drinking fluids, of course.
    Having one now, actually!
  • Yes. And I had one tonight that about put me in tears. It is a shame that others are rude. You can search comments, but really do we need to be rude when others want to share?

    Oh the shame!

What is wrong with you? Redneck is right.
  • Yes, Braxton Hicks are more frequent with subsequent pregnancies. I would not say I am having them frequently. Maybe I notice them once a day. The guideline I was told was to let your doctor know if you have more than 6 in a hour.
  • My BH contractions actually hurt, but they're infrequent. And, WKs, please note: everyone was giving this poster advice. Nobody is being a jerk. We're here because we want to be here, and as someone who has experienced very serious bullying, let me recommend we not throw that word around, yes? It's like "inconceivable"-- it doesn't mean what you think it means.
