NT scan bad results?

Hi all- we had our scan yesterday and had a measurement of 3mm. Dr was terrible! The sonographer was awful, she just clicked through her measurements so fast, by the time we figured out what we were looking at she was on to the next view. I had to ask her stuff like was that a hand we just saw, etc. it was so disappointing. Then she left us there for 15 min and returned with a dr. She literally said our scan showed an increase in fluid and the test was considered positive so she needed us to come back in an hour to meet with a genetic counselor, then they both just stared at us! I was like okay...what exactly does this mean? My husband had to ask what the measurement was and then asked what was normal. She said we were at 3 and anything below 3 was considered normal. That's all we got out of them. I freaked b/c I felt like she was telling me my baby was really sick as that's how they presented it. Ended up meeting with the genetic counselor and she was waaayyyy better. She explained we were pretty far along to do this test 13w3d, and that could be affecting the results. She also explained our options for further testing. As an IVF first time momma here it felt like really? Here we go again with the bad news. We are waiting for more tests and trying not to stress. Just had to share my experience and see if anyone else is in the same boat as we are all starting to have scans. Praying our little one ends up ok.

Re: NT scan bad results?

  • I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience with the doctor and u/s tech. FX that your other tests come back with more reassuring results.

  • Ugh, I'm sorry. Nothing about that experience is good. Did they talk about the Mat TI 21 test?

Boo for meanie techs. I had a relatively unpleasant one once last time. Like we were bothering her, and wasting her time. I have to have growth us toward the end because of bp issues, I had them monthly. I'm sorry you that experience. It's their job, and they do exciting stuff. Grumpy people in that line of work need an attitude adjustment.

  • One thing to keep in mind is this test is soooo not conclusive, the tech for my sisters US had her convinced that there was something terribly wrong with her baby. And she went on to have a totally healthy babe. Sometimes the wrong type of person gets into these fields that have no business in them. I would say strong people skills at the very least is a necessity, but this is true in so many lines of work sadly :(. Try and keep your head up and stay positive, I'm thinking that you are further along could definitely be the culprit here. Good luck and please keep us posted ;)
  • FX for your test results and you are in my thoughts and prayers
  • This here terrifies me. thoughts and prayers that the test results come back in your favor. My scan is next week at 13 w 2d...
  • I am sorry you had a bad experience. My husband and I had a bad result as well with our NT scan. Our baby had a result of 2.2-2.6 (measured 3 times) and they said that 2.6 and higher was a high risk and wanted us to do further testing. So instead of the 2 blood tests (first done in the first trimester and second done in the second trimester), we did a NIPT blood test which gave us a 99% accuracy instead of the 92% that the other tests gave. We are not so patiently waiting on the results which should hopefully be in by Monday. Hope they figure all of this out for you guys.
  • I hate hearing about bad medical professionals. I hope you get good news with your bloodwork results

  • Mine was done few days ago measured a huge 7.5 ! Waiting on cvs results today tomorrow or Monday its killing me
  • Ours measured 5.7. I am terrified. I am waiting on the M21 results (supposedly coming tomorrow) and then I have amnio scheduled in 2 weeks. I am just so sad. Our doctor gave us very bad odds, but I read a lot of stories online where everything turns out OK. I hope it does for both of us. Good luck.

  • I'm so sad some of you are also getting bad results. I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. No results for us yet, hopefully on Monday. Let's all try to stay positive and post updates as you get them. Thank you everyone for the support it helps and means a lot!
  • Can't figure out how others updated their status but we got our results today finally! They said we were negative for trisomy 18 so that's good but gave us odds of 1:25 that the baby has Down's syndrome. I go in tomorrow morning for a Verify blood test that is supposed to replace the amino. It's about 99% accurate so we will see. Our genetic counselor said to think of it as we have a 4% chance the baby has it but a 96% chance the baby is completely healthy. Fingers crossed and prayers going up!
  • Praying for you!

  • Fingers crossed for all of you with the 'abnormal' results!!

My tech has a sign in the room saying she can give no information or measurements and can not discuss any findings. I caught a quick glimpse at the paperwork and then googled the number after I left to see what it meant. I'm pretty sure it was okay but the Dr. Won't get the results until after the second blood work at 18weeks. I'm covered for NIPT so we did that as well to get faster results.
  • Keeping my fingers crossed for all of you.

Had my NT scan yesterday and the tech did give me measurements. However, she then made a point to tell me if the high risk doctor sees anything abnormal she will call me. Then said she couldn't say anything else.

I had NIPT which showed negative for everything, but NT Scan can check for other things too. A little freaked out.

  • @kleinjm1 this is so reassuring! I also went in at 13w 3d for our NT scan and it was also a 3mm reading! Our little guy had the cord wrapped around his neck which the doctor said could have affected his reading, but we were still freaked out. We had the verifi test done two weeks prior and knew that he tested negative for all chromosomal abnormalities, but the doctor said he still had to report this ultrasound as "high risk". It was so unnerving and upsetting that I broke down crying right on the ultrasound table. No one EVER even mentioned to me that it was late for the reading or that my son was measuring at 95th percentile for size which could have also increased his read. They also never mentioned that a cord around the neck could increase the size of the reading by .8mm and that they should have taken the lower measurements around the cord which was 2.3. I found all of that info on these boards and after calling the doctor back.  I honestly think some of these techs and docs need a full on training course in bedside manner!

So glad that everything is great with your son too and hopefully we can go through the rest of this pregnancy as uneventfully as possible! :)

Oh my goodness, I can't believe you had such a similar experience! I broke down on the ultrasound table too, it was so scary! Our doc actually said she thought the measurement was high due to the late timing of the test...I was like oh, so now you say so, thanks! Good grief, they seriously need to consider what they put us parents through. We did the verify test after and because everything was negative, they told us all the other concerns like heart defects because of the high measurement were no longer a concern. I am learning to take all of their "concerns" about the baby with a grain of salt! Here's hoping for continued drama free pregnancies!
  • I'm glad to hear everything came out favorably in the end. I went for NT testing a little late (13w5d) but was told even before I made the appointment that the results might not be completely accurate. At the US appointment we met with a genetic counselor first who went over how the results would be read and the possibility of false positives. That step was appreciated!!
  • Im sorry. But what is a NT scan? I didnt have this done? And im high risk due to type 1?
  • I'm glad you finally got to meet with someone who could be more human about your feelings. I pray that everything is okay, and for the medical staff to be prepared to help your little one if complications arise.
