Amniocentesis

Hi Ladies,

I had IPS testing done for this and my last pregnancy.  Last time with DS there was a super low risk that he had Downs Syndrome (like 1 in 2000 or something), however, this time the results came back as 1 in 65 chance.  Because I am below 1 in 200, I have an option to do an amniocentesis to determine for sure if the baby has Down Syndrome.  I have scheduled the procedure for Monday (it was the earliest that I could get one) and results are expected back in less than a week.

I am just scared, nervous, worried, etc. and am hoping to find someone who has gone through this and had good results.  I know that the chances of this baby having an extra chromosome are only 1.5% higher than normal, but it is not a reassuring as it should be.

Any other nervous Nellies out there?

  • No experience with amnio, just wanted to pass along some positive vibes! We had a 1/30 chance that this baby would have the same birth defect as our last baby, and that number seemed terrifying. But on the flip side, there was a 97% chance he wouldn't. And he doesn't. So try to focus on the positive. Good luck, keep us posted!

I had an amnio with DD.  I found that the anticipation and waiting for the results was much more stressful and upsetting than the procedure itself.  My results were completely normal.  Though everyone's experience is different, here was mine:

The procedure was done in a regular exam room, and I was fully clothed, though obviously my belly was exposed and washed thoroughly with betadyne.  They use an ultrasound to look at your uterus and make sure they have a good spot that the baby is not close to.  I did not look at the needle.  I did feel two pricks--one as the needle went through my skin and one into my uterus (maybe that one wasn't a prick as much as pressure or something?  Regardless, there were two 'feelings/pokes/pressures' I noticed).  The fluid was withdrawn quickly, and I would say the whole thing took 15 minutes from start to finish.&nbsp

I have had one with DD and one a month ago with this babe. It wasn't terribly painful when the needle went in but the pulling of the fluid was probably the worst of it. A very uncomfortable pressure. I had cramps that night and a little the next day but was fine after that and baby is also fine! It is very scarey to think about but like my doctor said the risk is minimal. Results came back good and it gave me peace of mind! I will be sending T&Ps your way for a safe procedure and good results!!!

I had one done Wednesday due to 1/25 risk. Procedure was easy, but I didn't look at all. I was just scared by the whole thing. No symptoms after. Got my FISH results yesterday that were normal. Full results in 10 days.
  • Good luck!

I had an amnio with DS1. They thought he had a congenital heart defect associated with Downs. Both were not the case and he's great.

The waiting for the FISH results (48h) was the hardest part. I felt a burning at the site where the needle went in, and that was not fun, but it was a fast procedure. DS also reached for the needle (you could see it on the US) which was really scary too. That was after the MFM people said that babies usually avoid the foreign object.

I'm going to go with no here bc FISH uses amniotic fluid and I think quad screen is a blood test.

Further googling tells me FISH has lab focus on chromosomes 13-18-21 and sex chromosomes initially, and then when the full report comes out, you get a map of all 23prs. (it was actually pretty interesting to see DS' full results).
