This might be a little long, because I want to get to know everyone and have y'all (I can't believe I just said 'y'all', I'm Canadian but have been living in the South too long) get to know me as well.
I've been lurking on TB for awhile and this is by far my favorite board.
I think I've gone through 60 pages of this thing, and have thoroughly enjoyed both the people who post here and the opinions given.
That said, it's probably a terrible time to introduce myself, because I've been reading about the massive forum melee that's gone in the last couple of days.
Anyway, I'm three months pregnant with my first child.
Very excited about it because I'm 33-years-old and thought I'd never have children. Every guy I've been with (ex-husband of 7 years included) has either been done with having children or just didn't want any.
My boyfriend can't wait to be a father, and that makes it even better xx
When I was a kid, my mum used to have a baby name book that I'd go through all the time. I liked to write, and I'd use it to name my characters with and also to dream about what I'd name my kids when I was older. That book is where she got my name from.
My name is Kyna (pronounced 'Keena') and I've always loved having a different name. I think it's supposed to be pronounced 'Kai-na' but I'm really glad it isn't because who wants a name that rhymes with vagina?
I was supposed to be called 'Koren', but my older brother told my mom it sounded too much like 'corn' (I owe him one for that, he'd do well on this board).
So I've always wanted to name my kids something different, but not BSC weird.
My bf really likes 'V' names, but most of the regular ones I hear sound boring to me.
If we have a girl, he wants to name her Vallica. He said he's always wanted to name a daughter that.
I actually like it, but since I've been lurking a lot, I know how y'all feel about made up names.
I won't be offended if you think I'm crazy for considering it and think I should go for something established like 'Valerie' instead (which I don't like).
I think you would be more receptive to my name choice which is Stella Blythe (bf's last name is two syllables and starts with an S).
The bf likes Stella, because he's obsessed with astronomy and the universe so the meaning behind it is cool.
Haven't told him about the 'Blythe' part though, not sure if he'd be as receptive to that.
As for boy names, I pretty much hate most of them. They're either overdone or too traditional for my taste.
I want something that my son could grow up and use as a professional, but still not smack of that preppie kid you picture wearing a sweater tied around his shoulders.
I found the name Varek (says it means 'from the fortress' and is English in origin) and I really love it. I ran it past the bf yesterday and he says he likes the sound of it upon first hearing).
As far as middle names go, I'm having a tougher time. He likes Alexander, but I've known a couple of Alexanders that we're really distasteful so it sours the name for me a little.
But Varek Alexander S- sounds kind of nice.
I was considering Alexei instead of Alexander because I'm of Ukrainian descent and I think it would be a legitimate nod to my heritage (even though Ukrainian spellings of the name may vary).
Family names are out. My parents names are Mervin and Shirley. There's no way I'm saddling my kids with that shit. My parents would agree.
So what do you think?
I appreciate honest opinions no matter how blunt they are. I have a thick skin and I swear more than a sailor on shore leave, so taking offense and/or glitterfarts are not my style.
Also, if you have any suggestions I'm open.
This kid inside me is only the size of a peach right now, so I have time to decide

Re: What's Up Ladies? Opinions Welcome
My favorite V name is Vivienne. I also like Stella.
How do you pronounce Varek? I'm not familiar with it.
I've seen Varek spelled 'Varrick' as well, I would pronounce it 'Vare-ick' with the spelling I mentioned.
I'm ok with Varek Alexei
But I also like Valeria and Valkyrie, thank you for the suggestions.
Thank you for your recommendations
Also, I'm laughing trying to imagine our son being called Vincenzo.
I'm Ukrainian and my bf is Scottish, our families would think we'd lost our minds.
Boy: Vasili, Valeri (Vah-LARE-ee), Veniamin (Ven-ya-MEEN)
These are Russian names, so also possibly a nod towards Ukrainian heritage
I like Vasili a lot actually, a Ukrainian variant is Vasyl (in which the 'y' is legit and not extraneous) and I like that even better.
The only thing I'd be worried about are 'Vaseline' jokes.
Kids can be assholes sometimes.
Even though my name rhymes with 'weena', I'd be rich if I had a quarter for all the Kyna Vaginas.
I know I know more V names, I just can't think of them for some reason.
Also, to the rest of your original post, Stella is pretty, but not my style. I also love Varek Alexei, especially the Alexei part.
I actually have been looking for a name that has a literary reference, and Verne is a great suggestion. I think I'd prefer it more as a middle name, though.
I really do hope that I can talk the bf into Stella if it's a girl though, I've always loved it but I want us to be on the same page when it comes to a name.
I'm sure he did put Valerie and Jessica together, some men shouldn't be left in charge of naming things
My bf's a fucking weirdo, but I love him anyway.
He suggested we name our son 'Slartibartfast' (from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) and I laughed for the entire day every time I thought of it.
He was kidding, of course.
I think.
I am pretty damned creative, I can make fun of anything
I just want to think about all the possibilities for teasing.
My mother is the most intelligent person I've ever met, and she still gave my older brother the initials KKK.
Poor guy played elite minor hockey for years when he was young, and all of his equipment and towels had KKK on them.
Ok, now I'm laughing again at the memory.
Thanks for your vote for Varek Alexei
Even though the name is getting popular these days, neither of us know any Stellas, child nor adult.
Middle names are pretty much only revealed at graduations and weddings, so I hear ya on that. But I've always been obsessed with knowing people's middle names for some reason.
Every time I would date a new guy that was one of the first questions I'd ask. Which would earn me odd looks.
But hey, I'm a special snowflake, what can I say?
Varek would probably be turned into Derek/Derrick a lot but I think that's okay.
When I tell people my name it's like they couldn't POSSIBLY have heard 'Kyna' and it gets butchered in all kinds of creative ways.
Kyla, Kyra, Kayla, Kenya, Kai-na, Tina, Kendra, Kyan...and the list goes on. I even had someone call me Kevin once
It doesn't offend me, I kind of make a game out of what people will mistake it for.
The one that does bother me I get most often. It's 'Kim' and it drives me batshit because that's the name of the woman my ex-husband left me for.
Anyway, I love the Vaughn suggestion, I hadn't thought of it
This reminded me of another boy name: Varnava. Called Vern for short and for English speakers that butcher the pronunciation of Varnava. lol I adore this name too.
Here's some other V name suggestions
Girls:
Viola
Valentina
Viveca
Vespera (means evening star so it has the astronomy thing with it too)
Vanora
Ukrainian names I think are cool:
Maryska
Oksana
Olena
Marina
Lilya
Dariya
Boys:
Valentin
Vallis
Vance
Vasos
Vaughn
Vogel
Vanko (Ukrainian)
Ukrainian names:
Artem
Maksim
Pavlo
Yuri
I also like Maksim, but my again my experience of hearing it somewhere before ruins that for me.
It was the name of one of the dancers on 'Dancing with the Stars' waaaay back when I actually watched television.
He was kind of sleazy and egotistical (or at least that's how he seemed on TV, he might very well be the nicest guy on the planet, who knows), and that's all I can think when I see the name.
Bad associations ruin a LOT of names for me.
If someone put a gun to my head and told me I had to name my kid Heather, I'd just take the bullet with a 'Thank you sir, may I have another?'
No offense to those of you with children named Heather or are considering it for your unborn.
I just hate a person named Heather with the passion of a thousand fiery suns.
*shudders*
Sorry if these are dups
Viola
Violetta
Verity
Vilma
Vanna
Vera
Venus
Valentino
Viktor
Valentine
Vincenzo
And welcome-- my name's Heather

Sorry, I just choked on my own petty hatred
I actually considered Venus for a second, but it ends in S and bf's last name starts with S.
Saying the name out loud would involve some Harry Potter-esque Parselmouth action on my part.
And I'm not a fan of Victor, but like Viktor.
Even though it's pretty much the same fucking name, so how stupid is that of me?
I'm all about the visual aesthetic apparently.
Vincent. Victor. Veronica. Valerie. Vanna. Valens.
Vladislav ("he owns glory") could be cool, maybe?
Baby Vlad would be rad!
But he'd probably end up changing his name when he grows up :P
My dad was born Miroslav, and changed it to Mervin. Because Mervin sounds OH so much classier than Miroslav. People called him Swervin' Mervin which was actually quite fitting if you knew him...
And I have an uncle Jaroslav, and he's always gone by Jerry.
But yeah, Vladimir would be out because of Putin reasons.
Vitali or Vitaliy
I love Vladimir when pronounced in Russian, but the English pronunciation makes my ears burn.
That said, I think it would be weird to name my son after someone I found hot anyway :P
There might be a 'Val' in the name somewhere though...the name doesn't HAVE to be a V name, it's just a letter we like.
A lot of people frown on sibling name alliteration (we're planning on having more kids) but I don't think it's that bad unless the names are stupid.
My two brothers and I all have K names, and our last name starts with K too.
It only got confusing for my mom when she'd try to yell at us. She'd go through the wrong two names before she got to the one who was in trouble
I actually expected a lot harsher criticism. I read through so many name threads on this board, there are WAY crazier names that people want to name their kids.
With most names I can pretty much predict what people are going to say about them on here.
My cousin named his son Bronson Ronald K-[highly Ukrainian lengthy last name].
How terrible is that shit?
If I can save others (and others can save me) from naming kids horrendous names they're stuck with forever, then honesty is a good thing.
