NBR: Take son to Dr or no?

Good Morning Ladies!  This isn't really pregnancy related but my 6 yr old son was horsing around last night.. of course not listening to me when I'm repeatedly telling him to stop.  There was a bag of tortilla chips on the counter.. like a stand up stiff bag of chips.  He's punching a pen through the bag .. I know.. being naughty.. I'm literally yelling at him the entire time telling him to stop.. but at the same time I have my hands in raw chicken because I'm cooking dinner!

so he ended up punching a hole in the bag and as he did that he also punched a hole in the tip of his thumb. Not really hole but he poked his finger and cut his thumb.  So I washed it and I put a bandaid on it. It bled but not a ton. He cried for quite some time about it but then seemed ok.  He cried again this morning about it.. which I think was more about him not wanting to get ready for school than it was about his hurt finger.

I've been battling in my head whether or not to take him to the doctor. I guess my concern is that it was pen so do you think I need to take him for tetanus reasons?  I don't think there's anything they can really do for his cut.  it's a puncture cut really so I don't really think they'd stitch it.  I could see maybe a butterfly.. maybe but I'm not even certain that they would do that. I definitely did not want to drag into the germ infested ER in our county.. flu has been insane this year and I don't want to expose him to all of that junk.

Take him or no?

Re: NBR: Take son to Dr or no?

  • Let me be totally upfront here. I am a pediatrician. I can't practice medicine online, but I'll answer this with "you're looking at him and I"m not." If you disagree with what I'm about to say, don't feel obligated to follow it. You're the parent and you're looking at him, not me.

If he's had all of his regular childhood vaccines, he's fine. Tetanus is part of the 4-5 year old shots. He wouldn't need anther one until age 11-12. We only give them for those sorts of wounds if it has been more than 5 years since the last.

There would be no stitches or other closures for a puncture cut. I'd avoid any doctor's office right now, unless you want the flu.

  • mattandlora  Thank You!!  That's what I was thinking but I wanted to make sure I wasn't writing it off if I should really be taking him. He's definitely up to date on all of his vaccines.  I feel better. Thanks.

  • You just want to watch the site for infection, puncture wounds tend to be harder to clean. If there isn't any excessive swelling and redness it will be sore to the touch but not excruciatingly painful for about a week.

  • I agree.  Just watch him and keep him home and away from the germ filled doctors office.

  • I tend to agree with PP.  If it has stopped bleeding, I'd probably put neosporin and a bandaid on it.  If it gets swollen or red and hot to the touch, take him in.  Don't need an infection.
