Intro/ Baby bedding?

FTM here and I don't think I ever properly introduced myself. I married My DH in October 2014, we found out we were pregnant a week before our wedding (we were trying, just didn't think it would happen so quickly). I'm 23 (24 in feb) and Dh is 25. I'm due June 11th and just found out Monday its a boy. We have two fur babies a black lab and a boxer, who are our world. I've lurked for a long time and comment on things every once and a while but have never been very active. I think all you ladies are wonderful, full of advice, and very supportive!

Anyway, enough about me. I found bedding from pottery barn that I fell in love with (it's pricey but I LOVE it). Anyone who has ever bought bedding there is it good quality, like it won't fall apart when I wash it? Where is everyone else getting their nursery bedding? (Sorry if this was asked already, I tried searching before I posted.)

Re: Intro/ Baby bedding?

  • Welcome - congrats on your pregnancy! PB has really great quality sheeting - my sister has vouched for the fact that they didn't compromise their quality with the nursery bedding. I'll be buying a mix of PB and Serena & Lily.

  • When we had DD we went to Toys R Us to look at bedding and the prices nearly made me die...We ended up leaving empty handed and stopped at a discount markety type place and low and behold there was a "gender neutral" nursery bedding set there for $40. It's cute and it's held up pretty well to washings and abuse.

I would imagine from Pottery Barn it would stay cuter longer and look nicer to begin with though :)
  • I would LOVE a handmade quilt! No one in my family is that crafty. I attempted to learn and it was an epic fail. Thank you ladies! The baby is going to be in our room for a while but I'm a bit OCD and want it all to match and be ready even though we are just going to look at it for a while. Weird I know, I just can't help myself. It drives DH crazy too.
  • So,  a quilt is going to be too much for a baby, you'll never use it for it's intended purpose, and a bumper is a suffocation hazard. So, all that's really useful in a set is the flat sheet. Which the baby will put all sorts of bodily fluids and such on. My personal opinion is that baby bedding sets are a cute waste of money. Just buy 3 (or more) crib sheets and call it good.

  • I'm not into nursery sets but I bought crib sheets and a crib dust ruffle from PB Kids and they have held up well.
  • Thanks everyone I had not considered everything you pointed out.
  • Yeah after reading everyone's thoughts I think I will just get the sheets and the quilt that comes with the set I like (to use later obviously). I'm thinking of getting the quilt personalized, not sure yet though. Thank you everyone for your help, much appreciated!
  • I'm a FTM, but one of my friends told me to get more than 2 matress pads and bottom sheets. She then said to make the bed with the mattress pad and bottom sheet and then add another mattress pad and bottom sheet and repeat 2-3 times. I guess in the middle of the night, it helps to be able to just rip the the sheets out and not have to remake the sheets.

I tried this with our DS, but the Target sheets (from experience) are VERY tight to the mattress with the pad on, I could not get a 2nd layer over the first.  Just my two cents...

I was recommended these with a flat pad between the layers by a friend who has 3 kids. They are pricey, but I was recommended 1 base sheet and 2 top sheets. Forgoing a bumper and quilt and spending my money on these instead!

  • I sew my own crib bed sets. By which I mean I make sheets and a quilt which I hang on the wall for the first few months.

  • My biggest advice is to save money and only buy the sheets and maybe the crib skirt.  Everything else is such a waste.  We never used the blanket that came with it or the bumpers due to SIDS.  Buy multiple sheets as well.  We ended up buying cheapos to go with the one that went with the set.

I'm planning on buying or making sheets, making a quilt for play time on the floor, possibly making cute changung pad cover (laying a waterproof pad over that for changes), and after swaddling time probably putting baby in those sleep sack wearable blanket things so it is safe and warm. Has anyone heard of those being considered unsafe? I haven't yet.
We used the Halo sleepsacks.  Loved them and I believe they were marketed as a safe alternative to blankets.  I don't know if there have been anything saying that is not true.  Our sleepsacks were the kind with arm holes since he hated being swaddled.  He wore them even past a year old.

We used the sleep sacks after DS was done with swaddling.  I would rather use those than a blanket in the crib when they are that little.

  • I'm just going to buy some cheap fitted sheets at Target. I will be making a quilt but it will go on the chair in the nursery.
  • On/off topic - Pro tip from my older sister: layer a mattress protector + a fitted sheet on top of a mattress protector + a fitted sheet. That way if you have to change baby's sheets in the middle of the night, you just have to pull off the top layer, throw it in the hamper, and go back to sleep.

I thought it was pretty genius ;)
