TTC after 35

intro - ttc # 1 at 36 (loss mentioned)

Hi everyone - been a bit of a stalker and finally coming out!
I'm 36 (almost 37) been ttc with DH (34) for a year, had one m/c at 6wks in oct - left me scared but determined!!
have appt with RE in two weeks
some struggles:
recurring UTI's - been struggling for years with this - have to pee after sex, drink tons of water, usually can't wear underwear (i know, crazy, right?)
slightly longer cycles - 34 days usually
migraines with prenatal vitamins -  have found magnesium drops (trace mineral) help
had to bully my ob to test me for hypothyroid -she didn't want to do a full work up unless i had two miscarriages (part of why we are now scheduled for the RE) -  she said my test was normal but i asked for numbers and it was actually tsh 2.77 (no t4 test done) which seems high for ttc
some progress:
bought the clearblue fertility monitor (off craigslist for half price!! ;) ) so just started tracking-before i was doing period tracking apps only.
the woman I bought it from was so helpful and also sold me 'the impatient women's guide to ttc' which i read in one night and thought was way more helpful than the old school books i had bought.
am on new chapter prenatals but for the first 10 months i didn't realize you were supposed to take 3 a day so i was way under dosing
spend way too much time self-diagnosing online, trying to work on being proactive but not crazy.
also taking fish oil, raspberry leaf tea
was taking vitex but worried when i read on boards that it could delay ovulation so stopped
have ordered progesterone cream but plan to check with RE about it
gave up caffeine (that was tough), alcohol, temporarily halting exercise (bmi pretty good at 23)

any advice greatly appreciated!  very new to all this so apologies if i missed etiquette steps always grateful for tips

  • Hey there, welcome to the board! I am sorry about your previous loss.

It seems like you are doing a lot of stuff, most that I have no experience with so I am no help there. I can cheer you on though and keep my FX!

I know you mentioned you bought the fertility monitor but have you been temping and do you use fertility friend?

If not I highly recommend it. They do have a free version (which I use) and when you sign up they send you lessons which helped me learn a lot about my body and wtf was going on.
I am not sure how to say this without getting a "solicitation" warning so I guess I just say that I am not longer active on THIS site.

  • Welcome! ditto @Nikolie93 I've got no experience with a lot of what you listed but Good Luck!! I also second the recommendation to try fertility friend if you aren't already.
  • Welcome! I'm so sorry for your loss. And how frustrating your OB didn't want to do a full workup until you had two miscarriages. Sometimes I just don't know what goes through these doctor's minds.

FX you'll have better luck with the RE!

  • Welcome! Sorry to hear about your previous loss.

Sounds like you are all over it. I also read The Impatient Woman's Guide (twice -- once before conceiving my daughter at age 35/36, and again recently), and while I found her writing insufferable -- the author is painfully unfunny, I thought, and trying too hard with her "jokes" (maybe this opinion belongs in the vent post?!) -- the information was gold. I thought it was helpful that she said there is no scientific evidence that stressing about one's fertility can impair it -- but that depression CAN be an impediment to get pregnant. What Twenge wrote about the timing of conception, and trying to have sex the day or two BEFORE ovulation, instead of just on ovulation day, was also very helpful. To that end, that's great that you got the fertility monitor. Who knows, maybe you will conceive again before you meet with the RE in two weeks. If not, it should make you feel good that you have an appointment on the calendar to focus on and that you're being as proactive as you possibly can.

Off Mirena Nov 2013, On Nuvaring end of Jan, Back off Sept 2014.  Never ending cycle starting end of Sept...
    11/14 Provera failed... cycle continues
12/14 High FSH (57 "midcycle")  OBGYN had no clue... about anything
01/15 More lab results coming back from RE. U/S showed small (1")cyst on left ovary, thin lining, and couldn't locate right ovary so  possibly straight to DE and IVF

Occassionally mess with the chart below to see "what if" and learn (not to make it pretty but because FF stays drunk with me).

Where did you find this fountain of youth to turn back time @lcwed‌! Sign me for up for that!!! 8-> lol just teasing

@ladydc78‌ oh be careful with raspberry leaf tea, it causes uterine contractions. Not something you necessarily want at certain points of your cycle and especially if you think you could be pregnant. I use it only when I'm trying to get AF to show up to start my cycle. Both times it started soon after I drank the tea!
    Welcome to the board!
  • Yeah, I got the same curse Captain Barbosa did.  I'm living it up. I have a birthday at the end of the month, must have been a Freudian typo.

  • Welcome to you LadyDC. I agree with @CML11 on the raspberry tea. Be sure to stop consuming it as soon as you get a BFP.

    LOL @lcwed. Can I be 27 again?

  • Hi and welcome. We are the same age and even MC'd our first at the same time. Thanks for the tip about the book. I have been temping but I would recommend getting a better thermometer than I have. Mine's super fast and only to one decimal point and temping 10 times in a row will never give a consistent number (I.e., ranging between 35.3 C to 36.4C which mean very different things for me today)

    .
  • Thanks for the welcomes! @CML11‌ Really appreciate the advice about the rasberry tea- in fact noticed a bit of cramping when I tried it. Another thing to check with the RE on! I agree the book had some cheesey humor but was but really liked the no nonsense, just the facts parts - esp the critical period being a few days before ov, @Stairbear‌ - I can't believe that's so poorly reported. Pretty sure that's what happened to us w/ our one bfp and was wondering how that happened before that bit of gold advice. @23Tez23‌ I have been temping but prob using wrong therm as well but couldn't find this mysterious pink one in any stores and am trying not to go overboard on the online ordering for all this stuff or I feel like I won't be able to afford a baby at the end of all this ! Haven't tried taking it a few times in a row but once I did wait until I'd gotten out of bed and gone to pee and back and it was way off, so I move as little as possible now when I grope for it on my nightstand. And I don't even bother trying to read it until I'm fully awake. Luckily it saves your last temp. Well that's why I have the fertility monitor-back ups are always good , right? Anyway thanks everyone for making this frustrating journey feel less lonely ! Will check out fertility friend. We re in Seattle right now on vacay so nice to take my mind off it all for a bit. What a great city this is ! Even in January ;)
  • 2.77 isn't high for must docs as its within range. My RE wants me at it below a 1 for tsh. I do also have hashimotos though.
    Best of luck!

@CML11‌ - very interesting about red raspberry tea!
