No Heartbeat on Ultrasound

Hey guys,

I had my first appointment at 6 weeks, 5 days. The doctor was only able to see the yolk sac, but no heartbeat. She said it is normal because it is still really early and she will see me again in a week (7 weeks, 5 days) and we will try again. I am absolutely panicking because I had a MMC in October and the only way we found out was because they couldn't find a heartbeat. They didn't find one at 6/5 then, but I didn't think anything was wrong (and neither did they) so I waited until my next appointment at 11 weeks, 5 days. When they couldn't hear or see one then we realized we had a MMC. I'm just so scared the exact same thing is going to happen again. Does anyone have success stories about not seeing the heartbeat until 7 weeks or later? I need some positive vibes and hope. I had a dream last night that we had another MMC and the doctor told me I would never be able to have children. I've been a wreck all morning

Oh I'm so sorry you're going through this. We didn't see a HB with my DD until 8 weeks. It was so stressful to have an u/s and not get the reassurance needed. T & P's for you.

I don't have any experience to offer but I know I've seen people say they didn't see a HB until 7 weeks. I hope everything turns out okay.

I have been on both ends. That's why I won't allow my Dr to do my u/s until I'm 7 wks. Hang in there.

With BOTH my first ultrasounds with my previous pregnancies, they didn't find much. DD1 they told me I just wasn't far enough along as I thought and with DD2 he prepared me for the worst. I had a feeling I ovulated later than usual so that is what helped me stay positive. I honestly think 7/8 weeks is when you see the heartbeat. Crossing fingers for you!! I know how hard it can be, I had a couple miscarriages as well. They completely mess with your brain.

I am in the same position. I went Monday at 6 weeks and did not see a heart beat but saw the sac and fetal pole. Going back again on this coming Monday. I keep telling myself it's fairly common to keep some sanity. I will definitely be thinking of you!!

I hope you get good news at your next appointment. Hopefully you just ovulated late. A few days can make a huge difference at this point because baby is developing so fast.

((hugs)) I'm sorry you are going through this. This is my first pregnancy so I don't have experience. My OB did insist that my first appointment be 8-9 weeks otherwise I wouldn't be able to see anything on an ultrasound. I hope that it was just too early for you to hear the heartbeat.

I went for my 6wks ultrasound and RE couldn't find a heartbeat. He said it was still early. I went back a week later and heard our little peanut's heatbeat.

Well I went last week at 5 weeks 6 days due to spotting and the ultrasound tech was chatting away with me while I was laying on the bed the probe thing was inside- having me change positions so she could get a "better view" etc and before she could explain to me anything. She pulled out the sonogram probe and was like "well I couldn't see the baby. But I think you maybe be earlier than you thought" that when she told me I measured at 5.6 instead of what I thought at 6.4...
From what I saw was... a black sac, with a little white blob sitting at the left side of the sac. Which I thought was the baby! Was it the yolk sac then? I was mad she took it out and took her gloves off before explaining to me what was what. So to your question, apparently it's possible. I didn't even see a baby at what was basically 6 weeks! And she was acting like no big deal.
I go back tomorrow at 7 weeks for another ultrasound. Ugh so nervous. Keep me posted on your story and I'll let you know tomorrow about my outcome.

I just went to my first OB appt two days ago thinking my LMP was 9 weeks ago. The DR could only see a gestational sac and according to my fiancé, she also saw my yolk sac. She said it looked like a much earlier pregnancy (6 weeks or earlier) or could be a sac which stopped developing. This is my first time being pregnant so I was freaking out. She sent me to get bloodwork done that day and also today to ensure the hormones are increasing and also for an ultrasound today. Although the technician couldn't hear a heartbeat, she showed me the heartbeat flutter. Said the pregnancy is in early stages, 6 weeks, 4 days and gave me pics. When I got home, I showed my fiancé and he said they look totally different than the ones from the DR appt. I pointed out the little peanut to him and showed him the heart and explained how we saw it beating. He said he definitely didn't see any of this at the DR visit 2 days ago. I agreed with him since I only remember seeing a peanut and nothing more. Try not to stress. Everyone's different and I figured for earlier pregnancies, what a few days difference make! Turns out my LMP was off and after getting the date from the technician, I counted back the weeks and noticed she is right. Hope this helps!

I'm so glad I'm a member of this website! You guys have made my morning! I know for sure my LMP started on Thanksgiving Day because I was at my cousin's house out of state lol. Buuuut....it was the first MP since the D&C I had in late October. So technically, my ovulation dates could be off. We TTC over the course of a week (from Saturday on and off until the following Sunday) so maybe I'm a little less preg than I thought....or maybe I'm just an insane worrier because I know how devastating a MMC can be! We haven't told anyone this time around yet. My boss figured it out due to my out of town appointments and apparent weight gain. Yep, she threw that out there. :-| Okay, I'm just rambling now, but for real...I don't know any of you, but you have made me feel so much better :-D

I got my ultrasound today. Measured a little gummy bear looking thing with a flickering heart beat at 120bpm!
(From last week not even seeing a fetal pole)
Pleasantly surprised

...Now if only I could get to my second trimester so I don't have to feel like actually poo. Lol

Ahhhhhh that's wonderful @brewer919 !!!!! I am living vicariously through you bc i went in at 6 weeks last Wednesday and saw gestational sac &yolk but no fetal pole/no heart beat.. Doc wants me back this Friday so I'm hoping and praying I get similar results that you did!!! I've been verrreyyhyyyy barfy so hopefully that's a good sign?

I'm sure you will get good results @lafoster511! My dr. said I have a deep uterus...whatever that means lol and that it is hard to see well, but for me it was 6w5d and for you it is only 6w so I definitely say to think positively! Good luck to you and please keep me/us posted!!

This happened to me yesterday. I was 7w5d based on LMP but was measuring 6w4d. (We dtd on cd22 so if I conceived then, it would make sense that I would be 8 days behind). I am getting blood work done Friday and follow up u/s on Monday with the head of the practice. Sorry you are in limbo as well. FX for a hb next week.
