Extended breastfeeding -- weaning

Hi,

My son is 14 months old, and I would like to begin the weaning process.  At about 12 months, he was only nursing morning and night, and that worked for me. Now, as soon as I get home from work, he demands to nurse, and on the weekends he wants to nurse before nap times as well.  He is a very insistent little guy.  When he wants to nurse, he screams and points at the couch and says 'mama' over and over.  He will work himself into hysterics until I finally nurse him.

Does anyone have any suggestions?  I weaned my other two before 12 months and just used my freezer stash to get them to 12 months, and they had no issues weaning.  I'm not sure if it is because he is older or just his personality, but I don't think he is just going to 'forget' about nursing.

TIA!

Re: Extended breastfeeding -- weaning

  • I am going through a similar situation with my 18 month old. I will only nurse her once a day. So if she is insisting to nurse during the day at any point, I will. Then at nighttime, when I usually nurse her, we will read books instead, or DH will read to her. If she doesn't insist on nursing during the day, I will feed her at night. I found that offering her a sippy cup with cow milk can help if I am in the middle of something and can't stop to nurse. I had to do that in the mornings when I dropped the morning feeding. She got used to it pretty quick. Good Luck!
