Not waking older child during sleep training..

UHGH!  IS there any way to accomplish this? DS 1 is 21 months and we waited quite a while to sleep trrain (10 months old) DS2 is 4.5 months and was sleeping through the night just fine until a week ago. 2-3 wake ups a night but naps are atrocious right now.  I's like to start sleep training, but I'm petrified of waking DS 1.  Any advvice? TIA!

  • 4.5 months is too young to sleep train IMO. Most sleep books recommend waiting until 6 months. It's likely the 4 month wakeful which is just a phase. 2- 3 wake ups per night is normal for that age.

I've never had one of my children wake up in the middle of the night from the other crying.

  • Are you already using some kind of white noise in DS1's room?  Not sure if it will be enough to drown out the crying, but couldn't hurt.  Sounds really tough - good luck!

  • Both boys have noise machines.  My problem is DH works nights so I have a routine that works really well right now.  Both boys eat dinner, then we go in the bath DS! first while DS2 plays with us in the bouncy chair.  DS1 goes into living room with bottle DS2 gets bath.  By the time I bring DS 2 to the living room for his bottle DS 1 is done and that gives me about 15 min for DS1 to play while DS 2 drinks.  By then it's about 7:30 and I walk DS1 inside for a story and into his crib he goes and then back to DS2 to finish burping rocking him. He usually goes down by 8.  I', trying to wean him off nursing to sleep.  SO do I let DS2 cry while DS1 is still awake or after he goes in his crib?  GR!  He only wakes once a night now about 5 am then up for the day around 7:30.  I just want him to able about fall asleep on his own wo rocking.  Or is it too early for that?

  • Too early. Sleep training is not recommended before 6 months. Why are you weaning off nursing to sleep? I nursed mine to sleep until they weaned (13 mos and 14 mos) and they did fine.
  •  @ashiscute Because my older one couldn't sleep without nursing and my younger one currently won'rt let anyone else put him to sleep but me including my husband because he only wants to nurse to sleep.

He's 4.5 mos old. At that age mine fell asleep nursing, in the car, or randomly at other times. It's normal. Babies need help falling asleep. If you want to listen to your baby cry then go for it. But the advice on this forum and by sleep experts is not before 6 months.
  • Way too young to sleep train. It's only a season, you'll get through it.

  • don't worry too much about the older one. i was very paranoid with my second, and when i finally did let the little guy fuss the older one never woke up and i was worried for nothing. besides, noise machines drown out a lot. we didn't even have them at the time.

This.  Whenever you do decide to sleep train, #1 may sleep through it much better than you expect.  One of my regrets is worrying too much about waking up #1.  It is probably part of the reason #2 didn't sleep through the night until about 10 or 11 months old.  When we finally did it, #1 didn't even wake up once.  They are in a very deep sleep in the middle of the night.
  • I believe there is a sleep regression around 4 months where a great sleeping baby suddenly reverts to not sleeping well at all. I would suggest to try and wait it out a few more weeks and your LO should fall back into their old routine.
