Colic

Who else out there is dealing with this? My LO becomes a complete terror every night from about 8pm to midnight or later. It's beyond miserable. I rock her, sing, offer a bottle, pat her back, rub her back, walk around, etc. nothing works. Ive tried changing formulas, gas drops and gripe water- she just wants to cry. Anyone else sharing this special torture?

Re: Colic

  • My LO has a sort of "witching hour" around 8pm but it usually only lasts an hour or so. Is she overtired or does she get naps during the day? Maybe she gets overstimulated throughout the day? Or maybe it's just colic - in which case I'm so sorry. :(

  • An hour or so? That sounds like a dream! I'm not sure...she sleeps whenever she wants throughout the day, I never wake her. As for over stimulation, I'm not sure about that either. We do tummy time, play with toys, sing, etc- but nothing too crazy. Today she didn't leave the house. I think she just likes crying...

  • I definitely think my LO has colic. It seems like he cries all day long. If he isn't sleeping, he's crying. It's a nightmare but I keep telling myself that it will pass (and hopefully soon!).

  • I don't know if my LO has colic for sure,  but he has to be borderline if he isn't.
    He cries ALOT.
I would say about 90% of his awake time is crying.    He is very rarely awake and content at the same time.

It sucks so bad,  I just wish he was a happy baby....I just hope it gets better with time.    I feel like I have aged 10 years in the last 6 weeks.

  • @AlliJeee‌ my LO used to do the same thing....inconsolable crying from 8p-1/2a until she appeared to have exhausted herself to sleep. Key word being "used to". I tried gas drops, gripe water, swaddling, rocking, holding her, etc etc nothing worked. I read about probiotics, and tried Gerber soothe probiotic drops. Gave her first dose in the afternoon and that evening we had no crying (besides the normal I'm hungry or whatever crying), and no colicky behavior ever since. I couldnt believe it....the first couple evenings I thought it was a coincidence, but 2 weeks later now I'm convinced the probiotics really helped her. She doesn't struggle as much with gas or strain as much to poop, which could be her system maturing or helped by the probiotics. She's able to comfortably pass gas by stretching etc herself without crying in discomfort.
  • It's so great to hear that other moms are experiencing the same thing I am....Misery loves company, or something.  I've got the same thing going on here - inconsolable screaming crying from about 7 - 12 every night.  Rocking, shushing, swaddling...at the 4 week mark, nothing seems to help her anymore.  Tonight, my plan is to drive her around when she starts fussing.  Hopefully that will help. She's been on Zantac for about 2 weeks now and it doesn't seem to be helping, but I am going to talk to my Pediatrician about probiotics and gripe water.  At this point, I'll try anything.  How in the world can someone survive 3 months of this?!
  • These Gerber Soothe colic drops......has anyone else had luck with them ?   DH hates giving LO anything that the dr. doesn't tell us to use,  but I am tempted to call the dr and get the ok so we can try them.

  • @mander82 yes those are the probiotic drops that I gave my LO and her colicky behavior went away the same day! Before that, it was nonstop painful crying and writhing for 3-5 hours straight in the evenings. I gave her the drops once a day for 2 weeks and then started weaning her off (once every two days and now down to once everyb3-4 days). We tried gas drops, and two different brands of gripe water. Not to mention all the other tricks like the 5 S's, massages, leg pumping, etc. but nothing worked. The Gerber Soothe drops worked and it was like magic!
  • Thanks!   I think I might try them....we have tried everything else like you said you did.     Nothing else has helped.    His reflux seems to be under control with the formula we are on,  but he still just cries and cries, and cries....its heartbreaking and stressful to say the least.

  • @mander82 I feel for you and your L.o :( we were in the same heartbreaking boat. Best decision I made when LO was about 5 weeks old. I just couldn't accept explanations like witching hour or baby is just letting off steam the only way she knows how etc....the cries sounded way too painful for it to be "normal". I was very skeptical after having tried everything else, but gave the drops a shot after researching it and reading the hundreds of positive reviews. So many reviewers said worked like magic which I roled my eyes at. Until I had the same experience! Good luck mama!

I had major colic issues after LO was born. She wouldn't sleep at all at night because of crying and gas issues. I would end up crying along with her because there was nothing I could do and I felt like such a wreck of a mom. :-( My mother suggested taking her to a chiropractor and I figured it couldn't hurt to try. I also like to try holistic healing when I can before trying drugs. It was literally that night after the appointment that I noticed a change. She's an amazing sleeper now and has little to no gas problems at all, the colic disappeared over night. The doctor was specially trained in helping with children and said what a lot of people don't realize is that birth is very traumatic for babies. LO had a lot of pressure on her neck area which was causing nerve issues and in turn not letting her body operate properly in processing gas and a few other issues. He was really careful with her the whole time and just massaged her neck to release the tension. LO actually sighed and completely relaxed in his hands when he fixed it. It was amazing and I swear it's like a miracle. She is know working her way up to 7 hour sleeping stretches and is the easiest baby to put down at night. Not a single sign of colic since that first appointment two months ago. It's up to you to decide what works best for you and your LO, but I just wanted to share what really worked for me, just in case it could be an option that you hadn't considered yet. Best of luck, and know your not alone. <3

found out ours has mild colic. Thank God it's temporary.

I think it is really wonderful that we are all here to support each other.

  • Mine has colic. We went to doctor and they put her on reflux meds but diagnosed her with colic. He said they'd help her. So far it's not helped too much.
  • Mostly been lurking around here because my LO colic makes it impossible to do anything. We are going to try probiotics which was recommended by his pediatrician, but right now the only thing that works is bouncing with him on the birthing ball or holding or wearing him upright and moving around constantly. He is fussy and screams and/or cries about 80-90% of his waking hours most days now and doesn't sleep much (maybe 10 hours in 24 hour period). He is in the peak of colic at 6 weeks so even though I feel like I am going insane, I know it will get better. Once he started socially smiling, that helped. For some reason, he is happy on the changing table, so we spend lots of time interacting there. He hates all other furniture and being put down.

Hugs to all you mamas that are dealing with this. It is not easy. Also don't be afraid to leave the house. I was at first because I was embarassed that he might have a meltdown, but then I did it and it was great! Sometimes a change of atmosphere may calm baby...maybe because it helps mom. It is always a struggle with lots of screaming involved go leave, but I feel so better when I am out in the world. Know that this phase will eventually pass and get people to relieve you during their witching hours, if you can!

How funny ... My lo is ALWAYS insanely happy on the changing table too but fussy before and after putting him on it. We've actually taken changing pad and laid it on the couch before lol. It worked to keep him calm for a little bit!

  • @snarkylibrarian    Ditto on getting out of the house.  I don't know what it is...but he loves going shopping or visiting other peoples houses.   For the most part,  he will be calm or sleep when he is out of the house.   At home.....its utter chaos.    I am convinced he hates his home.

Please keep us updated on how it goes with the probiotics. I've been contemplating them for my colicky LO. Who is also happy on the changing table. It's where I get the most smiles!
