help! bridesmaid dress!

edited January 2015 in March 2015 Moms
Ok, I'm in a wedding in June. I'm supposed to have my dress ordered by March 1 (due date is march 7). I have no idea how to go about ordering a dress that'll fit in June. Should I buy my prepregnancy size? Should I buy a size or 2 up from that? I've probably gained 40 pounds, and I have no clue how fast it'll come off. How hard would it be to take a dress a couple sizes? The dress is at https://www.alfredangelo.com/Collections/Modern-Vintage-Bridesmaids/8615S

Re: help! bridesmaid dress!

  • I have a wedding in June & I ordered my bridesmaids dress 1 size up from my usual.

  • I'm a BM in BIL's wedding on 5/2. If I give birth on my EDD (3/25- although highly unlikely), the wedding will take place six weeks post-partum. I consulted my seamstress, who'll also be taking in/out the dress and making it breastfeeding-friendly, and she recommended ordering at least 2-3 sizes up. Hopefully everything works out!

  • I'd go up a few sizes. You'll have to pay to take it in but bridesmaids dresses always need alterations anyway. Better safe than sorry. I was in my SILs wedding in October and had to scramble like crazy to get a new dress bc of my boobs and bump.
  • I'm a bridesmaid in May and i ordered 2 sizes up. Usually I'm a 2, but i got a 6 because my boobs got bigger... Haha. You can always alert down easier than altering up.
  • Oh I love their dresses! That's where I ordered dresses for my wedding :) I would order one that is a couple sizes larger than what you would normally wear, and start looking for a seamstress or someone who can take it in if you need. It's always much easier to take a dress in then to make let it out :)
  • The lady at our David's Bridal told me to order 2 sizes up, to give myself room for alterations without having to stress about fitting in it.
  • Thanks! You guys are the best! I knew I couldn't be the only one. Rebmit32, my cousin (the bride) has excellent taste :)
  • A good seamstress will tell you it is easier to take away fabric that you already have than to add to what isn't there.
  • I gained almost 40 pounds with my first pregnacy & it took me about 10 months to loose all the weight. I was also 30 which makes it's harder prob. I would go up 2 sizes maybe.
  • I'm in the same situation, but I'll be a bridesmaid in august. Ordering 2 sizes
up makes sense, as it can be taken in a few weeks before. I guess the style
Of dress is important too! Mine will be empire waist, so it will be quite flowy!
  • That dress runs small to begin with. So an 8 fits like a6. Then while the soft net is flowing the lining is not meaning if you get it small it will bunch at the lining. I would plan 3 sizes up from prepregnancy street size. Next option is to pay a rush and wait until you have the baby to order. I used to work there. Good luck.

  • Same advice as everyone else (probably 2 sizes up) but wanted to say I love the dress! Good luck with the fit!
  • I'm due March 25th and in a wedding April 25th. I ordered 2 sizes up and I still feel like I screwed myself over. The material doesn't have much stretch to it, but the cut is pretty forgiving.  I'm bigger to begin with and didn't gain much with my first so I'm hoping that this time will be similar (probably wishful thinking). We'll have to see how it works out. Good luck!
    Due March 25, 2015!

  • I would order 4 sizes up from your pre-pregnancy size. Bridal sizing runs super small to begin with. So it's already like 2 sizes smaller than the stated size than a normal dress. Then give yourself 2 more sizes just because you can't count on losing the weight quickly.

I had problems with my bridesmaids because they were so caught up on the numbers. For one she insisted on ordering a certain size and of course it didn't fit. we had to collect all the scraps from the other bridesmaids' tailoring to add matching panels to her dress to try to let it out. No bueno. It's super easy to take in though, so err on the side of bigger is better.

  • One of my bridesmaids was pregnant for my wedding and she did order 2 sizes up, but she also ordered some extra fabric that the dress was made out of in case she needed more. It was super cheap for the fabric and she while she did not end up using it, it helped put her mind at ease about fitting into the dress. My dresses were similar in fabric to the one you will be wearing and they can be hard to let out/match fabric too.

  • One of my bridesmaids has her baby in end of may and the other was 7 mos pregnant on the day for my sept wedding. We tried to pick something that worked for everyone. First bridesmaid really used wedding as a goal for weightloss- but they both ordered their dresses too big and needed to have theirs taken in. Looking at the dress (pretty!) I think you could order it quite big and have it taken in. It may be pricey to have alterations but it's unlikely they will have to take it apart and rebuild it. Silver lining - it will fit like a glove and feel fabulous. Maybe check how some pre-preggo clothes in areas like bum and shoulders ? Use that as a guide? (ie: I wore a non preggo blaser at work today and it mostly fit but a little tight across shoulders). Remember there are always fabulous foundation garments available! (Spanx, skimmies, control top panty hose etc)
  • I am in a wedding 8 weeks after my due date and I had my fitting around the beginning of my 6th month. The lady at the bridal shop measured my bust and went up a size for the dress...I'm super nervous about what I'm going to get! With any luck it will be plenty big and we can just take it in.
