Twin Transfusion

any Moms with identicals out there go through twin to twin transfusion and lived to tell about it? I'm 26 weeks pregnant and the twin to twin transfusion has just started. there's extra fluid around one baby but their weights are the same so the doctors are hopeful that it will go back to normal. Any tips, advice,or inspirational story to help take my mind to a better place until Tuesday when I go back to the doctors.

Re: Twin Transfusion

  • Prayers that everything will be perfectly fine!  I am sure that is scary.  I personally did not go through it because my girls were di/di, but I know a couple of mo/di moms personally.  One did have to have her boys quite early due to transfusion, but they did just fine in the Nicu and are thriving at home.  Another mom I knew had pretty crappy medical care while pregnant with her twins (bad insurance coverage), and transfusion was not detected in utero.  She carried them to term (39 weeks I think), and once they were out, they looked as if some transfusion had occurred undetected.  Obviously they did just fine as well! Minimal Nicu time and they are amazing and beautiful 3 year old girls now.

  • Sending love and prayers your way! I actually got diagnosed with TTTS about 2 weeks ago at 21wks. I was sent to a specialist in Baltimore at Johns Hopkins, where i underwent laser ablation surgery to correct the transfusion last Friday. So far our boys are improving each day! I know how scary this is first hand! So if you want to chat about it, let me know! It's not very common and its hard to find other moms that have and/or going through the same thing! Hang in there mama!!
  • @StarNHeaven‌ I'm so glad your boys are getting better each day! That's awesome. They told me that since I'm farther then 24weeks they won't do the laser treatment (not sure why). What was your boys fluid sizes? Where their weight or bladder sizes different?

@MrsP419‌ thank you for the possitive outcome stories!!
  • Baby A (our donor) went from fine to no fluid and no visible bladder. Baby B fluid went up to 10...and the umbilical flow started getting worse for Baby A :( so that bought us a golden ticket to the operating room...less than 24hrs after the procedure Baby A had a fluid pocket of 0.9 and a bladder was visible! Baby B's fluid is now 8 which is normal and Baby A's fluid is now 3 :) they said things should normalize by this week. I dont think they are able to do the laser surgery if you are greater than 25wks...im not sure why either :/ what is your twins fluids/bladders?
  • I am just starting to show some difference in fluids between a and b....we are rescaning this week on Thursday....if no changes then we take it out to every 2 week.  However I am a NICU nurse and have seen many babies with twin to twin be born, sent to the nicu and do well.  So just take it day by day....they will follow you closely!!

  • @StarNHeaven‌ o wow so great they improved so quickly! As of Friday, Baby A (our donor) has a fluid pocket of 2.5cm & Baby B has a fluid pocket of 10cm. The high risk drs said their fluid is still in "normal" rage. B's the high end & A's the low end. But they are just drastically different from our previous visit Christmas week so that raised red flags. Both their bladders are still the same size. So they said that this is just the start of it & they hope it will correct itself but we shall see on Tuesday.
  • @apbauer0615‌ thats still good that their bladders r still visible!! When do you get scanned again? I know its so worrisome, hang in there mama!
  • @StarNHeaven‌ I went in today for another scan. A is still the same which is great but B got a little more fuild which isn't the best. So now I will be going twice a week for them to scan me/them. Their hope is I make it to 30-32 weeks & I'm currently 27, so that freaks me out a bit
  • I can completely respect that. It is so scary to think they could be born so early. Im so glad that A seems to be stable at the moment. Try not to worry too much about the amount of fluid down the 0.10 sometimes it's not truly exact because they r moving so much. Are you seeing a MFM dr? Ill be praying for you. You are doing an awesome job mama!
  • Thank you! I'm getting so uncomfortable from all the extra fluid in B, I think they're def going to have to drain some Friday. I live in NJ and currently seeing the high risk drs at St Barnabas hospital, they have a great NICU as well so puts my mind a little at ease
  • Im sure!! How much is fluid is B measuring? Glad that you are delivering at a good hospital! Let me know if you want to chat on Facebook, hang in there xoxox
  • So this has been a roller coaster of a few days.. Went into hospital Thursday with pain from B's fluid. They had to drain, he got up to 14cm & A had zero. They were monitoring me everything went well w/drainage, both babies were doing good. Sat they tell me they're moving me to a lower risk room & going to let me leave Monday. 10 mins later they come in & tell me that blood work from me came back bad I developed somthing called mirror sydrome & my body can shut down at any moment & the only way to fix it is to do s c-section now. So as of 7:08 & 7:15pm Jan 17th Baby A & Baby B have entered the world 1lb 11pz & 1lb 12oz. A is breathing on his own & B needs some assistance but both doing good considering.

  • Prayers for you and your little ones!!
  • Thank you. Boys are now a week and a half old, up to 1lb 14oz & 1lb 15oz. We named them Jack & Bradley. I am just counting the days til they are home & healthy with me. This is the most stressed out my husband & I have ever been, going to be a long 2 months. Thankfully we have great family & friend support & my aunt even works in the nicu
  • I am so glad to hear from you! I cannot imagine how emotionally draining this has been for yall, but know there are people thinking and praying for you all and your boys. Sounds like you have a great support system which is wonderful! Try and hang in there. Take one day at a time and hold on to each other for support. Keep us updated on your sweet angels! Xoxox
