Screen Lowering During C-Section

So I'm starting to write my birth plan and am going for VBAC. But if I do end up having to have a RCS, I was looking at the new trend of gentle or natural c-sections and wanted to talk to my midwife about it as an option, just in case. I didn't have the screen lowered during my c-section with my DD, but I'm wondering if any of you have ever done this and what your experience with it was?

    No experience. To my knowledge though the "family oriented" or "gentle" c-section option (which I have to snort at the name, sorry) is at the discretion of the hospital, not just the provider. So first the hospital has to allow it and then your OB has to offer it. I totally could be wrong - I haven't looked into it further because I don't want to even think about having a RCS. Head in the sand, I know....

    What is screen down? So you can watch the procedure? That would absolutely freak me out.

    I know my hospital doesn't offer gentle c-sections. I asked just in case. I'm not sure I would want the screen down if it were me, but I would definitely want immediate skin to skin while they were stitching me up, assuming I was stable enough to hold the baby.

    No experience, but I read a blog about this recently. The screen was lowered after the incision.

    @rm2013, I know, the name is terrible. I don't think there's anything gentle about a c-section

    @colleen4019Having the screen down would totally freak me out if I would be able to see all my insides and everything. But if they only show you the baby as it's being born, I'd be ok with that I think. 

    @whitfry, that's where I am right now. I'm not even sure my hospital policy would allow it, but thought I'd like to ask just in case. I would love to be able to hold the baby while they are stitching me up and maybe even have the opportunity to nurse.

    I'm not certain I could handle the screen being lowered?

    But my hospital does do the skin to skin contact after the baby is taken out and then the baby will leave with my husband and nurse for clean up and tests prior to me being wheeled to recovery where they'll be waiting for me.  My husband is on the fence about looking over the screen--his thirst for knowledge says do it, his natural reticence at seeing the insides of his wife says otherwise so we'll see.

    I'll be having a RCS and asked my doctor about skin to skin right away. My hospital doesn't allow it unfortunately. While stitching me up my husband will go with baby to get cleaned up and have skin to skin. Then once I'm back in recovery room I can hold the baby. I personally don't want to see my insides. My husband looked over the curtain with our DS and they would even allow us to take pictures during. But it's nothing I would want to see.

    @jennypm, I love that they allow your partner and baby in the operating room while finishing up the operation!

    My bestie had an emergency C and they didn't put the screen up. She said she didn't watch, but her DH did, and seeing them pulling out her insides to get the baby out was the most disgusting freaky thing he's ever seen.

    I had an emergency c section, I didn't have a screen, but they knocked me out with the gas the second they got my son out. My husband had just finished getting his scrubs on and watched through a window. To this day he is still scarred by what he saw. Although I did have an abruption as well, so there was a lot of extra blood everywhere. But I wouldn't willingly want to watch myself get cut up. No thanks.

    I will be asking about it if it comes to that.  I felt a huge disconnect not seeing my oldest come out.  I have heard some hospitals object citing sterility.  If I get that response, I will ask for a mirror.  But just to see him come out, not the rest.

    I did!! I watched with a huge mirror above me. I loved every second. I asked questions and got to see how my body carried my little guy. I was so moved seeing him being pulled out. It wasn't freaky or anything to me but amazing. An out of body experience almost. My husband took pictures of the whole surgery as well. I also did skin to skin immediately while they were suturing me back up. My little one fell asleep on my chest instantly. I am having a RCS this March and am going to do the same thing. Watch and have immediate skin to skin.
