feeling discouraged...

Amalia is just over 2 months old and has been a CHAMP at BF!  I have been trying to pump here and there so daddy can feed her to and I have some BM on hand when we have a babysitter and so on...the past few days pumping has been super hard, I have hardly been able  to pump 4 oz  between both breasts in 20 min. :(  very frustrating!  ANY TIPS???  HOW ARE YOU LADIES DOING WITH BF?

Amalia has seemed full after feedings and seems happy and content...fyi I believe she is getting enough. it's the pumping that has me feeling discouraged.

Re: feeling discouraged...

  • Pumping can be so evil! My BM dried up last week completely. I had to EP for emotional reasons and I started RIGHT after labor. My milk came in two days before I left the hospital and I was doing great with pumping, but my right boob wasn't producing much. Within a month after getting home, I had clogged ducts and AWFUL mastitis with a 101.1 fever and delirium. I had a hospital grade pump (which I recommend, see if the lactation consultants at your hospital, if you delivered at one, can give you one on loan. I couldn't afford the rental and they gave it to me on loan for free because of supply issues) and my milk still dried up :/ I'm EFF now.

Are you pumping during the night? You can pump after every feed for 10-20 minutes (10 is probably easier). To EP, you have to replicate breastfeeding, so pumping after every feed would be easier and would result in emptier breasts (DO NOT GET MASTITIS OMG). Best of luck! There are tons of resources on Le Leche League's site too if you BF and pump! I avoid them because I had to switch to formula and they are NOT fans, but their resources are awesome!

  • I got 1 oz total after breastfeeding this morning and was psyched! You should really only expect more if you're pumping in place of a feeding.

  • i did not write that first post very well, sorry.  i pump between feeddings and get 4 oz total out of both boobs.  Thank you for all the input!

  • If I pump at the end of the day before bed I only get about 2 ounces each side. Spunds pretty normal to me! Like others said the yield is better if I'm replacing a feeding, not pumping in addition to.

  • So happy you're LO is BF so well now! Mine is too and I try to pump once a day but that always doesn't happen and if it does, sometimes I don't get very much. My H wants to help with feedings for binding but I rarely get enough for a feeding (4.5oz). It sucks bc I want him to be able to help but I don't really have a solution right now. I just pump what I can and that's all I can do. I tell him this is just temporary and he will have plenty of months to feed her once she moves to solids ;)

  • I'm lucky if I can get a 1/4 of an ounce after feedings and I can only get 4 oz if I replace a feeding. If you can get more than 1 ounce after a feeding it's considered and over supply actually so you have nothing to worry about. Most women would kill to be able to get as much as you are :)
