A/S question (and a bit of AW)

We had our A/S yesterday and found out we are having a healthy baby boy. But, after the scan she did an internal scan, as well, to check my cervix. I know she didn't do this with DS (5 years ago) so I was worried she thought something was wrong. I asked doc why they did that this time and he said they started doing them with all A/S's about 2 years ago to check if I am at risk for preterm labor (I'm not). Just curious if anyone else's doc do this? OH, also, my nurse told me I won't have my glucose test done until 37 weeks??????? Surely she said that wrong, right?

Re: A/S question (and a bit of AW)

  • Congrats on the baby boy!

I went yesterday for mine, nothing internal. I haven't heard of it being internal so late, but better safe than sorry!

I've already done my glucose test, but I believe the standard timing is 28 weeks. For sure confirm with your doc!

Haven't had mine this pregnancy but for my last a/s they did. Luckily I was forewarned so I could "prepare." I was glad they did last time because it put my mind at ease that everything appeared to be going well.

Eta I can not remember when my glucose was done but it was definitely before 37 weeks.

  • I think the glucose test at 37 weeks sounds weird... My OB had told me somewhere between 22-25 weeks (I think??) or maybe it was 27-30. I don't remember. :-S

I haven't been told there would be an internal u/s, and I would hope they'd inform me ahead of time. However, I've read other ladies having this done as well during their a/s so I guess it does happen. Glad everything's A-OK with you, and congrats on your boy!

  • Yeah, I will check next time with doc, maybe she meant 27 weeks. It's seems pointless to do it at 37.
  • I had one, too. They told me when I got there that since they didn't have a measurement for the length of my cervix they wanted to get one now to have as a benchmark for later.

The way my doctor explained it is that a shortening cervix indicates advancing toward labor, my presumption (dangerous, I know) is that if there are other problems, they may measure again as an indicator.

  • I was told 28 weeks for glucose. And I haven't done the A/S yet.
  • I don't even get internal U/S at the beginning and didn't last time (2 years ago) at all so I'm assuming not, though I did go into unexplained preterm labour last time so not sure if they'll do anything different later in my pregnancy yet this time (as of right now she's just going to have me come in for more frequent appts during third tri).

My last glucose test was done at 26 weeks, so I'm pretty sure that's when I will have it done again!
  • glucose at 27ish weeks.

Maybe she got confused with Group B strep which is tested at 37w??

regardless, congrats on the baby boy!

  • I had my cervix measured with the internal with my twins, but no other pg.  Honestly it seems goofy to me because things can change so quickly, so whether you're at risk or not now really has no bearing on if you'll be at risk later (your cervix length can change constantly).
