Baby Noises ... Am I being paranoid???

Hey everyone!

I haven't written since I was pregnant with my little bundle of joy. She's been here for almost four weeks now and I am beyond thrilled.

But recently, I've started to feel concerned about noises she makes. She coughs sometimes when she eats. I'm assuming that she is just eating too fast. She also makes little squeaks and grunts in her sleep. I just figured she was just making noises. She'll make gurgling sounds.

She doesn't have a fever. She's not having trouble pooping. She's not having gas problems, as far as I know. My husband and I can usually get a few good burps out of her at feedings (I'm pumping and we're supplementing with formula). And when she's awake she seems happy. She smiles at us a lot.

I know some people will say talk to her pediatrician. I plan on it. I've got a list of questions ready when we go see him next week.

Does anyone have any insight before then?

Thanks for all the help and advice!

  • My little one makes similar noises

    Test
  • Yup. Totally normal. Newborns are incredibly noisy!
Obviously, it's still a good idea to talk to your Dr if you have concerns.

  • I love the noises that Alaina makes.  When she's waking up from a nap, she grunts, groans, squeaks and practically howls.  It's hilarious.  Her nickname is Squish (I don't know - I came up with it when they handed her to me in the hospital) but hubby and I joke that we need to start calling her Squeak instead.

Enjoy those little noises - we're going to miss them eventually.  :)

  • Totally normal but can't hurt to confirm that with your pedi, for your own piece of mind. DH does this hilarious impression of LO's grunting noises. So funny.

  • I call my daughter squeaky because of all the noises she makes!
  • Glad you posted. I've also been nervous listening to my LO sleep because I hear every groan and squeak. My pedi says they are normal and they outgrow them. My friend is a pedi and she says it is because their larynx is t fully developed and it usually matures in their first few months. Still makes me nervous and makes it hard to sleep!
  • If she's bottle fed and makes gurgling sounds while eating, she may need a slower flow nipple.

These two are just so funny...

Also, due date has come, gone and I am just so anxious to meet baby!  Please be healthy and strong baby, mama can't wait to meet you :)
  • Ya, we call LO "the squawk box" due to her noises. Thru the baby monitor she sounds like a pterodactyl when she's asleep.
  • Wait until the sleep screaming. That's always adrenalin pumping fun ;)

    OMG.
LO has done this 3 times and it's terrifying until you see they are ok.

    That reminds me of this:
Oh my god. That is freaking awesome!

This started happening at 4-5weeks and now happens almost anytime LO sleeps more than 2 hours in a row-- has not done good things for my peace of mind, sleep quality or sanity!

Aside from the periodic cries of distress she's extremely noisy all the time--the first night we were home I hovered over her bassinet most of the night, the next week I had to clutch DH to remain in bed and say "sleep noises, sleep noises" over and over to resist checking on her. DH, who loves her noises (and can sleep through them) calls her squeak toy and I occasionally refer to her as baby dinosaur in response to her sudden squeals.

  • Today LO has started sleep wailing: a sudden burst of intense crying that went away again after 5 seconds or so, without waking. Thanks baby but mommy does not really need the extra shot of cortisol!
