2nd Trimester

Timing for classes?

If you are taking any labor prep classes (lamaze, bradley, etc..) or infant CPR, breastfeeding, etc..  when are you scheduling those?

I just called to start scheduling some of the classes we're interested in taking later this month & the lady told me I'm way too early (due april 29th) and they recommend taking them 4-6 weeks prior to due date.  My sister was put on bedrest at 29 weeks and I've had other friends go through similar things, so my thought was to get them done with earlier rather than later.  I know there is a risk (especially with my prego related forgetfulness) of forgetting lots of details, but I'd rather take them and get them over with earlier I think...after my convo with the lady I guess I will schedule later in Feb, but I just don't feel comfortable waiting until the end of March or early April.  Also - I feel like I am going to be waddling around by then and not wanting to leave my couch for much!!

Anyway - just curious when others are scheduling/taking classes in respect to their delivery dates.

TIA

Re: Timing for classes?

  • They shouldn't be able to tell you it's too early.  For your own piece of mind, like you said, I'm sure you'd rather go now.  We are going in the middle of February and I am due May 10th so just about the same timing as you.

  • My child birth prep class recommends taking it btw 28-32 weeks and the class we signed up for starts exactly then.  I would think you don't want to be too uncomfortable during the class, you want to be able to concentrate on what's going on.
  • I wasn't due with my DS  until the end of Sep. and started our Bradley classes in mid-May.  We finished up in July. It was early, but i wanted them out of the way; there is too much other stuff to do in those last few weeks.  We continued our own "home-study" once a week, reviewing some of the material and practicing our relaxation stuff until showtime.  I thought it was perfect for us. If you want them now, insist on it. You pay for the class, they shouldn't be albe to tell you what or when....you're buying it!
  • We only took labor prep class and I was early compared to the rest of the class, 28 weeks. But everyone ranged from late 20's to mid 30's in the class. I would just take them they work best for you. We are not taking any classes this time.

  • I'm taking Lamaze and parenting classes in February and I'm due April 20th.  They actually offered the January classes to me as well.  I would call back and tell them you would be more comfortable attending the earlier classes.  It's not her place to dictate at what point is reasonable to join the class.  As long as you're pregnant, you qualify!
  • Our Bradley class is 12 weeks long and they only offered it twice in the "spring" - the 2nd offering ends 3 weeks after my due date so we had to take the earlier one which begins tonight and goes through 3/25
