Cloth Diapering

Critique my NB diaper list?

OK so it's been over 4 years since I've CDed a newborn and I can't find the file I had which told me which diapers I had.

Currently for the NB stage I have 6 NB-sized prefolds and 2 Grovia NB AIOs. They were acquired via trades a long time ago when we just started TTC. I hope the elastic in the AIOs is OK. Any input on those AIOs? They are the older style. I also have 2 Flip covers that I can fold down small enough for a NB, so while I'm not counting them in my NB stash I will have them to use. Same goes for 4 flour sack towels, not counting them, but will have them available for backup.

This is my current "wish list":
2 pail liners (one for when the other is in the laundry)
1 large wet bag (for travel or long days out)
1 small wet bag (for the diaper bag)
12 more NB prefolds (for a total of 18)
6 NB fitteds (like GMD workhorses)
3 Swaddlebees Simplex NB diapers (something "easy" for DH, he likes the style)
4 NB/Size 1 covers (should I make this 6, if I have the 2 Flips for "back up"?)

How does that sound? Like enough? Not enough? It would be 29 diapers. 24 of those would need covers. So maybe 4 covers isn't enough? Enough to do laundry every-other-day? Or should I aim for 36 total?

Thanks so much for reading!

Re: Critique my NB diaper list?

  • I hated my grovia aios.  Hated.

I would aim for 36 total changes.  I would get one more of each size wet bag, but apparently I have a wet bag problem.  And I would aim for 6-8 covers.

Do you have cd safe detergent and cream?

Detergent, yes. We use Country Save on all our laundry, we've been using it since I was washing CDs for DS, so we'll keep using it.

As for cream, we used CA Baby which sometimes I hear is OK and sometimes I hear isn't. But since we did have some issues with our diapers I don't plan on using it. We used the CA Baby diaper spray with DS and I'll use that again, but I don't know about a cream. And we didn't use cream with him often, either.

What are some recommended creams? (ETA: I have to find one sans coconut oil, as I'm contact reactive to coconut.)

  • What TJ said (minus the grovia comment b/c I have no experience there). I wish I would have gotten more GMD workhorses and NB simplexes. They were amazing.

And definitely get some more NB covers like Thirsties size one or Sweetpea or RaRz. All great over prefolds and fitteds. :-)

  • I really love the simplexes I have, but they didn't fit my almost 8 pounder until 4 weeks.

Did you have the Newborn Simplexes or the one-size Simplexes?

I'm talking about the NB ones. Granted, my kid had super chicken legs, but we got leg gaps until 4 weeks. I still love my simplexes, and would buy them again if I restarted my stash, but she did have to grow into them. For a similar type of diaper, the imagine NB bamboo AIOs are awesome and inexpensive. They fit at birth and still fit at 7 weeks.

Thank you! I'll look into them. My kiddos were 8 even and 8,2 at birth. I'm just trying to make a well-rounded stash that's all natural, no microfiber.

  • I don't think Earth Mama Angel Baby bottom balm has coconut oil.  I really like it.  A tiny bit goes a long way though. We had some buildup from it because DC was caking it on like you would Desitin.

I must have a wetbag problem too, but I would definitely get one more wetbag of each size (at least) and another pail liner for EOD washing.

As already said, 36 changes.  I'd add more workhorses -- easy, cheap, good at containing poo unlike some AIOs.  Definitely more covers.  With the majority of your stash being absorbent parts needing a cover I'd go with 6-8.  Maybe 3 of them being itty bitty covers like Sweet Pea, Bummis NB, Thirsties XS and the rest being covers that get small but also will last a while like RaR, Mini Coveralls, Thirsties Size 1/Assunta tiny.
