Yep. That happened. I got up to pump in the middle of the night and was half asleep when I looked down and noticed the milk from my right breast was red!!! Scared me to death, but immediately asked Dr. Google and read that it's actually not uncommon. It can happen with a cracked nipple or broken capillaries internally, often with engorgement (which I was). They call it "rusty pipes". Ha! Anyway, supposedly it's fine to give to the baby, but it looked so disgusting, I just couldn't bring myself to do it. So I dumped it. Luckily it only lasted for the first couple minutes of pumping, so once it turned normal, I switched out for a new bottle and at least salvaged some of my 2am pump sesh. Anyway... just a little tidbit in case it happens to someone else.
Re: Blood in breast milk!!
Warning: expect black stools in LO's next few diapers if they ingest any blood. It's from all the extra iron. That caught me off guard too.
Hope you heal quickly.
