Blood in breast milk!!

Yep. That happened. I got up to pump in the middle of the night and was half asleep when I looked down and noticed the milk from my right breast was red!!! Scared me to death, but immediately asked Dr. Google and read that it's actually not uncommon. It can happen with a cracked nipple or broken capillaries internally, often with engorgement (which I was). They call it "rusty pipes". Ha! Anyway, supposedly it's fine to give to the baby, but it looked so disgusting, I just couldn't bring myself to do it. So I dumped it. Luckily it only lasted for the first couple minutes of pumping, so once it turned normal, I switched out for a new bottle and at least salvaged some of my 2am pump sesh. Anyway... just a little tidbit in case it happens to someone else. :)

Re: Blood in breast milk!!

  • Oh my goodness, sorry that happened to you! I've heard of it before but not yet experienced it. I always assumed they were talking about just a tiny bit of blood.

  • @shevaCC Thanks. It was a momentary freak out, but totally fine. I was surprised at how much it was too! I got about 2 1/2 oz of red milk. So weird!
  • Ugh, so disturbing. My nipples were sore for a while but I didn't realize how bad it was until my poor DH was watching DS while I had a shower and started freaking out because he was spitting up blood. I felt so bad because I had literally just noticed little red dots on my nipples when I undressed and thought "oh no". Went to a walk in that day and got an Rx for Dr. Newman's nipple ointment. Walk in Dr said it was fine to keep nursing but I felt so weird nursing my little vampire baby for the next few days.

Warning: expect black stools in LO's next few diapers if they ingest any blood. It's from all the extra iron. That caught me off guard too.

    Hope you heal quickly.
  • @seamonkey0814 Thanks for the heads up on the black BM. I was just thinking how I was off work yesterday, so I nursed him all day rather than pumping. So there is definitely a chance he ingested some...
  • @redhorizon343 Ha, yeah it was only because I gave LO a bottle before bed and didn't pump then. So by 2am I was about to explode. It was really boob preservation more than fortitude. :)
  • This happened to me with my second baby. My nipples were in such bad shape i had to pump to get some relief from the nursing and try to heal. It was disgusting. Bright, bright red.
