How long should you swaddle your baby at night?

My baby is 5 months old and very close to rolling over from back to front. Every time I try and stop swaddling him at night, he doesn't sleep and we have a very bad night. How old is too old to swaddle and how do you stop without disrupting his sleep?

Re: How long should you swaddle your baby at night?

  • We stopped at about 3mo because I was worried about daycare swaddling and not being able to keep a close eye in-case he learned to roll while being swaddled, slim chance I know but anyhow...the first few nights were bad but now at 5 mo he is sleeping well without the swaddle. and actually hates it if we wrap him up for any reason.

  • DD will be 5 months next week has rolled both front to back and back to front and we still swaddle. The advice I have gotten from others on here is I will know when the right time to stop swaddling is. I just don't think she is ready to give it up so we will revisit the topic later.

  • We haven't swaddled for a while now. It was starting to really piss him off and he broke out of it every night anyway so we gave it up.

  • We also went from the swaddle to the sleepsuit and it's worked well. She was waking herself up in the middle of the night fighting the swaddle, so it was time. She still has the startle reflex though, which is what the sleepsuit is for. We transitioned right at four months.

  • Almost 5 months here and still swaddling for naps and night. We have tried to wean but she's happy swaddled and sleeps well. She will let us know when she is ready.
  • Still swaddling. He just won't sleep without it. Our Merlin sleep suit should be in by the weekend!
  • Just over 4 months here and we just transitioned to the Zipadeezip in the last week. DS started to break out of the swaddle every night so we figured it was time. He's done well with it and haven't noticed any real difference in sleep. He's also not swaddled for naps at daycare so he was used to sleeping without anything

  • I swaddle with LOs arms out. At daycare we have the Halo swaddle sleep sack which can be used with arms in or out. At home I think the swaddle sacks I have are Summer? I just pull them up only to the armpits and swaddle her that way.
  • We stopped when we found him almost face down, swaddled, despite being buckled into his RNP. That was the end of RNP and swaddle.

He was ready because we just cold turkeyed it all. No problems switching.
  • Still swaddling here, 5 months next week. He just needs it still. We have both the merlin suit and a zipadeezip at the ready though!
  • Five months tomorrow and still swaddling with arms in. She can't turn over in woombie plus. Until she sleeps takes a nap and sleeps with her arms out, I'm not even trying it.
