Dairy free for how long?

How long are you dairy free moms staying dairy free? I plan to breast feed exclusively for 6 months and continue to breastfeed for the first year. Do the sensitivities go away or get better after a while or do we have to be dairy free the whole time we breast feed?

Re: Dairy free for how long?

  • Our doctors suggested trying a small amount of dairy once a month to see if they still react. I waited longer between checks as my first ran such high fevers when exposed to it. She didn't stop reacting to me eating it until 18 months and couldn't eat it herself until 2. It can really vary by child.

  • Most babies outgrow the allergy around 6 months to 1 year. I had severe allergies as a kid and couldn't tolerate milk until almost 3 years, so I'm hoping he doesn't take after me! :(

  • My LO is just over 5 months. I have been dairy free for over 3 months now and am planning to try it when she is 6 months old. Has anyone reintroduced dairy with success or failure? I stopped due to reflux. Her reflux is completely resolved, been sleeping flat for 3 weeks. I'm still scared to add because what if it comes back??
  • I have a freezer stash from before I went dairy free and plan on giving it to him at the end of January when he's almost 6 months and see how he reacts. This was recommend to me by the LC. Even if he doesn't have the dairy intolerance I'm thinking of staying dairy free but not completely... Maybe some pizza here and there but other than that mon dairy is helping w my weight loss so I might do this as long as I can
  • I've been dairy free for 4 months. At 6 months I was told we could try and reintroduce. I plan on over indulging in ice cream at that point. Will I regret it? Probably. Will it be worth it? Absolutely.
  • @Erika101076‌ I feel like I have gained weight since dairy free Cuz I'm eating more carbs. Thanks for the tip your LC gave you-I will totally do this. That way it won't linger in my system! I also have a huge stash of dairy milk from the beginning-would be nice to use! Thanks mamas!! I think I'll definitely do pizza! Been craving it!
  • I reintroduced at 5 months and have had zero issues. I think his guts just needed to develop more and it wasn't an actual allergy.

  • I have a question- even if we avoid dairy, is our own BM considered dairy? If little one has reaction to dairy in our BM, how can they tolerate BM in general?

Also, would lactose free milk/ ice cream be OK to eat if we're trying to avoid dairy?
